*Official* Pakistan v Australia in UAE 2014

You didn't think the game was live when Australia were batting in their first innings? Look at it this way...

If Australia got the same 261 runs in 100 overs, Pakistan's approach in the second innings would've been different. Game definitely wouldn't have been a definite win for Pakistan at that point. It's all about batting for runs and time.
well sure but it wasn't a "definite" win today either. by "live" i mean "both teams can still feasibly win", which failed to be the case well before we started batting.

i really, really put the vast majority of the blame for this on our bowlers.

Oh, well ok. I just have a different definition of live. Live to me is if the game's result isn't completely obvious. Once Australia were shot out in two sessions it was basically over barring a miracle. If they'd batted more time, Pakistan have less time to build their lead in the second innings and less time to bowl them out again.

I can get behind the definition except for the fact that we actually had to win this Test. Maybe it's just me but the margin of victory is kind of meaningless to me aside from vague curiosity.

Margin of victory didn't say as much as how many overs Australia batted. There is no hiding from that, and it says something. Its not just a meaningless statistic. It perfectly sums up the difference in ability of both sides in these conditions.

Reckon Ashes 2013 a good example of a series where margin of victory for the tests (1st and 4th in particular) was important to look at when judging the difference in the teams. Obviously hindsight helps, but it made Australia winning 2013-14 not incomprehensible.

Well played Pakistan. Surprised that we won a series against Australia after 20 years in such a convincing way. The margin of victory was amazing too.

More than the batting and bowling probably the fielding hurts more to their fans. I know its scant consolation butvwe feel this way every series through our fielding :p

Don't get me wrong, our batting was ****. But it barely registered compared to the visible-from-the-next-galaxy steaming mountain of **** that was our bowling.

And in any case, Flem's point is correct - the number of changes that need to be made to the batting is actually quite small. Maxwell was so hilariously a failure that it's not worth worrying about him, and the rest are more or less set for Boxing Day, with the possible exception of Rogers and Marsh (though Clarke is a clearly and quite major concern).

Think i'm most upset about the fact that Johnson did ton up or get a 5-fer on his birthday :(

Pretty pathetic performance all-around though.

I mean, say for the sake of argument, we win both tosses and put up 400-450 in both Tests, which I actually feel reasonably confident would have happened had we won the toss. Pakistan would have most likely then put on somewhere near 700 and won by an innings anyway.

pakistan are going to miss misbah and younis so much when they go in the next couple of years. their climb back up is largely down to them giving the now depleted attack some runs to work with.

only azhar ali has shown consistency out of the youngsters. asad always looks good then gets out for 30.

misbah to play until he's 50 imo

Misbah now tied with Imran and Javed as Pakistan's most successful Captains in terms of wins. Of course, he had to get all his wins away from home. Loved this sarcastic post on Twitter: "Yeah but Afridi would've enforced the follow-on."

The problem with completely ignoring the performance here is that just like India no lessons are learnt. We will keep seeing similar pitches by everyone who can produce them if we keep playing like this on them.
