Haha yeah that is so true about the lower league fan.

4-2-3-1 is such a catch all formation anyway.

I was panned on here for comparing it to 433 but I agree. Other than wing backs you could find a way to coin it for most systems, or most 4 man defence systems anyway

I think the worst thing about Hodgson is his defensive systems. They're usually two banks of four which sit deep and hardly press. In the Euros, especially against Italy, when Pirlo was running riot and just strolling unchecked it was cringeworthy to see. The team has to resort to clearances and last ditch defending just to keep the opposition at bay, and it also hinders the transition going forward and inhibits any fluency. The guy is just a tactical dinosaur and I didn't get the schadenfreude towards Redknapp when he didn't get it. 'Arry, anyday over Hodgson.

Yep totally agree with this. Have seen stuff I would call both 4-3-3 and 4-4-2 described as 4-2-3-1. Think it's more obviously similar to 4-4-2 than 4-3-3 (see United under Moyes with Rooney as the nominal 10) but LVG (for example) describes his ideal 4-3-3 (with what he calls the "point" of the midfield 3 playing in a more advanced position than the other central midfielders) in a manner that would normally be described as 4-2-3-1 as well.

Put me also in the Redknapp >>> Hodgson camp, although obviously we will never know for sure but I don't think he would have been suited to international management. Still would say he was a better bet than Woy though.

**** me, honestly the best England managers are always the ones that don't get the job.

Harry Redknapp, sheesh.

Is master ****wit Townsend seriously saying that's not a penalty?!?

He dives in, in front of the player, doesn't get the ball. It's a penalty, even ****wit can surely figure it out.

**** me I forgot how **** Mario Gomez is.
I'm pretty certain this is exhibit A as to why this happened a couple of days ago.

The need for an out and out goalscorer is massively overstated. At the top level, those kind of players make team worse, not better.
Yeah, erm, what?
Bayern Munich had Gomez scoring goals for fun in 11/12 and won nothing. Got rid next season and won the treble.

We are comparing him with Roy Hodgson here...
and Woy is a better manager, more experienced in every way at International level. Less of a crook and a ****-wit too.

Look I didn't want us to go English, but if 'arry was the other option, I'd take Hodgson every single time.

Meanwhile Real and Barca have struggled immensely and should probably ship off their prolific scorers

Uninspiring to say the least. Who'd have thought that turning the clock back 35 years to a simple 4-4-2 formation may not be the best idea after all.

Sterling being played out of position doesn't help, of course.

btw is Rooney actually playing tonight?

Don't think that is particularly relevant as Ronaldo and Messi in particular both do quite a lot more than score goals. Fairly sure the point was about players who offer goals and nothing else.
