Acted like he was a better player than he is, chose the wrong county to do it at.

Gale banned for the remaining two matches though, hopefully we stick Lyth in charge or you know someone who's being playing most of the campaign, maybe Sidebottom.

Heh, didn't expect that at Derby. Can't affect Worcester's promotion chances though surely?

Well, looking at the table, it certainly could - it's tight at the top in D2. Worcester's home game against Surrey next week will probably settle matters - Surrey need to win their last two it seems.

Anyway replacing the batting of Gale isn't my main concern my main worry is who captains the team in his place.

Those bowlers would get murdered by a test match side to be honest - not a wicket taker amongst them and some sprayers, but the bats are not far off England at all.

I disagree.

Sidebottom has a successful England career behind him and is in as good form now as when he was playing for England. He leads the attack and is the go to man when Yorkshire need a wicket. He has dismissed many quality batsman such as Kumar Sangakkarra (twice cheaply in the same match!), Chris Rogers, Marcus Trescothick, Eoin Morgan (twice), Usman Khawaja, Varun Chopra, Dawid Malan, Chris Nash, Ed Joyce and Peter Horton.

Bresnan and Plunkett have both been in the England side recently and had more success than most of the current incumbents such as Woakes, Stokes and Jordan. And lets not forget Brooks who opens the bowling ahead of the former England players and is the highest wicket taker in the First Division Championship this season. The only Yorkshire bowler who would definitely get murdered by a Test Match side is Rashid but even he has had a pretty good season by his standards, especially in the second half of the year.

Bresnan and Sidebottom at their best (which was years ago) will still just 'good' Test bowlers though, and nowadays are way substandard. Plunkett I don't really rate, although is clearly not a terrible bowler by any stretch at Test level. Brooks would be a interesting one, but my instinct is that he is the kind of guy who would get plundered by a line up full of good bats, his pace would be a bit of an issue.

Considering the state of the vast majority of pace bowlers going round Sidebottom would still be a damn sight better than most.

Sidebottom is probably still as good as some of the bowlers we have played this summer.

It is the lack of Broad and Anderson from that Yorkshire side that makes such a difference, not the merits of the Yorks bowlers themselves.

So has Sidebottom improved considerably from the time when he was starting to wane and rightfully dropped from the England team then? I find that very doubtful to say the least.

It's one thing taking county wickets against in the main mediocre batsmen but there's a whole different knack needed when you go up in class.

Sidebottom would have been a useful 4th seamer this summer though, would have kept it tighter and taken as many wickets just by bowling in the right area more. Not saying you would go back to him but I couldn't see him having a test as dire as Jordan did or even Broad and Jimmy at Lord's.

Why let the truth get in the way of a lazy misconception? How convenient to ignore the fact that a high proportion of Sidebottom's wickets this season were the oppositions key batsman including several international players as I mentioned in the post above. Sidebottom is the last bowler against which such an accusation could validly be made.
