I'm not sure there's a batting lineup we could find that would compensate for our bowling. It's been a heck of a while since Anderson was as good a we'd like in this format, and Stokes & Jordan just looked piss poor today. wadr any argument over Cook, Bell, Ballance & Root vs Vince and Taylor is shifting deckchairs on the Titanic. Not that it's stopping Swann sounding like a stuck record on the matter on TMS.
They set us 300 to win. Not 375, or 350. 300. That isn't an epic chase, especially with the new regulations. South Africa cantered to 328 today and we act like chasing 300 is worthy of an open topped bus.

SA have a world class operator or two in their top order. We won't, whoever we pick in the top 5. Plus we don't really know whether conditions in their game were the same as in Cardiff, so it's probably better to avoid simple comparisons. Trouble is our attack weren't able to make as good use of them as India have been. Bottom line is we're going to be 2nd rate whoever we pick in this format. Which is why I got in trouble the other day for suggesting that's there's no point in Anderson playing in anything other than test matches nowadays, He'll usually go for plenty, we'll lose anyway, and he'll be completely buggered by the time we need him next summer.

hales scores 9 of his last 33 balls .Surely could have done better than that
Yeah, it was a bit odd. Probably slowed down to try and stem the flow of wickets. Whatever the reason, he's the least culpable member of the side simply due to being on debut. You'd figure that he has as good a chance of anyone of doing a job in these games.

That should be it now, a thrashing lol role reversal. My phone has been bombarded today with a lot of very happy texts about todays game lol.

No time to get carried away its only 1-0, Rainas 100 was great of 74 balls.
Im off to Nottingham and Leeds ODIs, hopefully I wont be a jinx !

Cook really needs to find something quick with the bat. There is just no fluency or form with the bat at the moment at all. Balance is awful. Hardly looks capable of scoring in front of square and that just allows the opposition to set easy fields. They barely had 4 in front of square today. Wide mid on and off, cover, square leg, and point. Needs to run down the wicket and slog a few straight or over the legside and he might get a few more balls to cut and pull. He never was a completely fluent player but at present he doesn't even seem to be hitting the legside balls well and leaving cuttable deliveries. The way he is batting now is just horrible.

He can get away with it in tests because he'll score the runs eventually. Here it matters how quick he scores them and there just isn't any kind of fluency in his game right now and he isn't hitting the ball at all well.

Contrary to what some have said Cook has actually did pretty well for England in odi cricket but there is only so much longer he can go on playing like this. Unfortunately for England Morgan looks pretty ropey right now with the bat.

Oh ****ing god the ****wits have started on the BBC - England were apparently missing sad sack during the powerplays to contain Raina and Dhoni.

England could thrash India by 100 runs next match. Probably won't and England are ****e, but the knee-jerk reactions from numpty football supporters crossing over because they're bored are tedious.

I enjoyed the county game yesterday. Cork spent the whole innings saying he couldn't believe that Taylor wasn't in the england squad then did his WC squad at tea and didn't select Taylor in his 15.

oh god the irony
Nothing knee jerk about calling everything about today's venue ****e and calling the selections ****e.

Perhaps you could rationalise picking players who could have played in a game on a similar scale of meaningfulness tomorrow, leaving out a guy who'll almost certainly play in the 2015 World Cup (Finn) and leaving out another perfectly reasonable option (Moeen Ali) on a spin-friendly pitch who's torn India apart for the past few weeks.

Yeah. Personally I don't see the point of playing bits n pieces players like Woakes, Stokes and Jordan when England should be trying to find a proper third seamer. Those three aren't going to do diddly squat over here other then go at 7 runs an over. TRY and find a proper third seamer, play just one of those 'all rounders' and Tredwell I guess. Root will no doubt be in the team too, so your've got a decent sixth bowling option there.

Considering he took 4fer and bowled well today, odd game to brand Woakes bits and pieces. Rankin/Finn in for the other two would be the best bet.

Root shouldn't be in the team, he isn't a good ODI bat.

If you can't even contemplate chasing 300 on a small ground on a pretty placid pitch then just give up. The bowling is ****e, but its ODI cricket - chasing scores is the name of the game.

Yeah, it's fairly obvious now (always was though tbf) that our ODI side going forward is incredibly reliant on Finn. With Jimmy, Broad, Finn, Tredders + one of the "bit's and pieces" players (Woakes or Ali for mine depending on conditions) I reckon that's a pretty sound attack.

Don't mind them ****ing about a bit now while Broad is out and trying some different combinations........but I really hope they get Finn in early in this series and see how he goes. It is becoming obvious that Jordan and Stokes are just too risky to gamble with atm.........the pair of them were Dernbach like in their ****ness last night (and that's probably harsh on Jade tbf)
