Yeah I got to see very little of the last two tests. Series has finished so quickly.Tomorrow was the only day I could actually watch any of this test, bloody India.
10-11 Ashes was similar but the Aussies generally put a fight up in their second innings when beaten. And although that was three innings victories versus two here, England's margin of victory at Southampton was greater than our second innings total. This was still the closest five match series since the 2009 Ashes IMO.
The gap between the two sides was obviously a lot smaller, but remember how badly Australia got beaten at Lords. The series was basically over by then. In 10/11 England were never behind in the series; maybe I'm being a bit of a hindsight expert but Perth was a bit of a freak occurrence.10-11 Ashes was similar but the Aussies generally put a fight up in their second innings when beaten. But obviously the draw there had 517-1
EDIT - wouldn't you say the home Ashes last year were closer, even I'd not in terms of score?
On the other hand, with two to go in 10-11 the series was in the balance whereas I never saw us not winning after Southampton though maybe that was just meThe gap between the two sides was obviously a lot smaller, but remember how badly Australia got beaten at Lords. I guess Cab's argument is that it doesn't make it a close series.Scoreline is one thing but the difference between the sides was far, far smaller last year than has been the case here
Maijly because of the quality of your bowlers. Australia's batting was an absolute joke last summer.Scoreline is one thing but the difference between the sides was far, far smaller last year than has been the case here
Good at OT and The Oval iircMaijly because of the quality of your bowlers. Australia's batting was an absolute joke last summer.
They get no points for remembering how to bat when the series was gone. While things were up for grabs they spent all series collapsing ridiculously when the game was in the balance. Aside from Old Trafford which was a road.Good at OT and The Oval iirc
Can't say I agree. They had another awful collapse at Durham and would have lost at the Oval if Clarke hadn't wasted so much time. They might've got an Ashes whitewash out of it though. Momentum started to shift after Lords.
They played a lot of the cricket in the last three tests. Pretty much all of it bar that collapse at Durham tbh. Can't say I agree. They had another awful collapse at Durham and would have lost at the Oval if Clarke hadn't wasted so much time.
Johnson's spell at Brisbane was what got Australia the whitewash. England were shellshocked by it and never recovered, and after their collapse at Adelaide tbere was never going to any other result than 5-0.
Vic orthdox said before the series that he reckoned their ultimate aim was to win the second series. Gave them a reason to keep going. They might've got an Ashes whitewash out of it though. Momentum started to shift after Lords.
I actually remember an Aussie at my cricket club before the home series saying he didn't care if Australia lost the first 7 tests if they won the last 3. Personally I think holding the Ashes is a bit overrated in a literal sense, but it obviously means a lot to some people.Vic orthdox said before the series that he reckoned their ultimate aim was to win the second series.
