Revenge series? seriously? Who actually fell for such cheesy media stuff?
Someone we don't actually need.

Read Martin Crowe's recent article on cricinfo, well explained. Dhoni is still in the team because he feels there is no successor to him who is mature enough to captain the longer format.
Well, it's hard to see who could do it. Despite his poor series I would probably give it to Pujara and have Saha in as WK.

I think this series showed how much more challenging five tests is and how you can rate teams based on how they do in them. If India drew 1-1 it would be seen as somewhat successful but instead they've been murdered. It also makes me wonder how South Africa would do because I forgot the last time they played a long series.

Don't even think I can call this performance spineless. More than a problem with desire or mental fortitude, it seemed like the Indian batsmen just did not have the tools to deal with swing bowling. And apart from a stint in county cricket, I don't see how they can fix that. And correct me if I am mistaken, but the county season will overlap with the IPL. Sad to say, but that will be a very easy choice for most players to make.

And Anderson is so so very good to watch, if he wasn't such a massive ****, he would have been my amongst my top 4 favorite players in the world.

Dhoni can't be dropped from the test team, even though he should be. As long as he is captain, he will never make the guys feel bad enough about losing tests. And that is the saddest thing about his stint as captain.

Ganguly was the only Indian captain I have ever seen who used to genuinely make the players feel bad about playing bad cricket. Azhar didn't put it across. Don't know how it went during Kapil's, Vengsarkar's and Sunny's time. Sachin was always in his shell, because I don't think his brain can comprehend players not giving their best on the cricket field. Dravid too much of a gentleman to make the point forcefully. .

I would have him replaced by either of Naman Ojha and Saha. A stroke of genuine inspiration could be to have Bhuvi as captain. Why should it always be a batsman? It would be nice to see Bhuvi as captain. Quiet, confident guy.

Agree about Ganguly. You could really here the anger in his voice when Jadeja was batting like a ****ing idiot in the last test. They really need some of that right now.

But Bhuvi is not a certainty in the team, is he? What is your opinion on Kohli as the captain?

I am just not sure about him. There are temperamental issues there that can really harm the team in the long run. Someone like Bhuvi can be so much better for the side.

Reading back through the thread post-Lord's and we were all so depressed. Remarkable turnaround.
Yeah that's why I said that we shouldn't just be slating India for being gutless. England deserve a lot of credit not just for the turnaround, but for how brutally they hammered India over 3 Tests given the horror run they'd been on before.

I have never had much faith in Chris Jordan but his 4-18 suggests I may have been wrong. Was out today, was it decent bowling?

Not particularly, apart from the one that got Virat. Yet he's got talent in all fields IMHO.

kinda hard to say tbh. he bowled some decent balls, he bowled some quality balls and he bowled some absolute pies/dross. his figures were more of a reflection of him getting to bowl at the right time as opposed to broad, anderson etc

Jordan came on at the point the collapse had already started. Was easy pickings. He was certainly bowling better than at the rosebowl. If he can get his runup and action kinks sorted out he will be a massive asset. A decent number 8 bat and fantastic slips fielder. Very telling that he was fielding at slip to the spinner which is usually your best catcher.

Yeah, with Root/Ballance/Jordan we look like we have replaced the slip cordon that we had 2008-2012 which is a good sign. Both Jordan/Woakes got more bounce than I expected today and had the Indian bats looking uncomfortable. Stick with them and see how they go in the Windies would be my shout with Finn/Plunkett + a swing bowler as back up.

Thanks guys. His line (at least at the Rose Bowl) was poor, so I can't get behind him yet. Seems a like a decent lower order batsman a la Broard. Must take your words on the fielding. Not sure that fits the bill of a Test Cricketer though :(

You are quite right, he needs to sort out his issues, but honestly, everything is there to be a top-class performer. Yet he isn't exactly young and one wonders why he hasn't fixed his glaring run-up issues before now.

So in summary, who knows?

His run up issues are due to injuries. He used to tear in from a Michael Holding distance and hes actively trying to slow himself down. It could obviously be smoother and the his very pronounced placing of the seam at the start just makes it look worse.

He's the sort of guy that is probably talented at whatever sport he plays. I think they'll persist with him for a while as he does have a happy kncak of taking wickets and cleaning up tails.
