How many doosra's does he bowl an innings? I'm pretty sure I read he hasn't taken a wicket in any form of cricket with one yet.

Moeen's gonna become a legitimate Test bowler. He's already improving very quickly, taking wickets against a good quality batting line-up, and if he continues to work on his pace, control and doosra he'll be a real consistent threat. Watch out Saeed. The Beard is coming for ya!
Starting his test career averaging 32 against Sri Lanka and India is great stuff, 18 wickets in 5 tests is respectable for any spinner just starting out let alone a "part timer".

Moeen's benefiting from being under-rated. As his reputation grows, batsmen will study him more and play him with more care. He looks like a bowler who could end his career with an average between 30-35 now, but how he bowls when batting sides have figured him out and treat his bowling with the caution/respect it deserves will be interesting to see. That, and the challenge of playing as both a Top-7 batsman and a frontline spinner.

Personally, I can't think of many players who have managed to balance batting in the top 7 + being the frontline spinner well at Test level - Shakib, Vettori, Ashwin? Am I missing someone obvious?

Didn't Ajmal say before the Sri Lanka series it would take Moeen 6 weeks to become a test quality bowler.

How long has it been?

If Jimmeh can't play at OT, I'd bring Plunkers in for him, and Kerrigan in for Jordan.

Kerrigan should come in for Jordan anyway IMHO. Actually I'd probably prefer Monty, but I don't think that will happen.

Yeah 3-80 hardly bowling himself back into contention though. Yeah he is excellent at OT normally that is true.

Think Plunkett is the crucial pick though, tall quicks tend to make hay there.

There's talk of a Finn recall, with OT and the Oval coming up I wouldn't be gutted if they did that.

Frig me I wish we had a proper spinner.

Think Ali's bowled quite acceptably this summer tbh.
& this posted before his six-for.

I think it stretches credulity to think any spinning option we have (including recently retired ones...) could've done better.

Moeen playing with Ajmal is an important factor in his development, IMHO.

For all my hackneyed gripes about him being a filthy chucker (and they aren't entirely baseless either) Ajmal is 24-karat.

As someone once observed, talent borrows, genius steals. Moeen swiping a few of his tricks is a heartening thought.

How good was his ball to castle Jadeja? Admittedly the batsman played it in a sub-church mice poor fashion, but the dip was fantastic. Proper spinner's dismissal, IMHO.

Now Prior has gone Cook has to think for himself instead of doing what Prior tells him to.
Fair call. Cook's loyalty to Matty was both admirable and understandable, but the bloke was done. Keeping is a hard gig at the best of times, for a bloke of 32 with one good leg it's a godless ask.

Prior's been one of the recent greats for us, but from here I think it'd be a surprise if he plays for England again.

Moeen Ali becomes the first spinner since 1971 to take 15 or more wickets against India in a series outside Asia. Bowling records | Test matches | Cricinfo Statsguru | ESPN Cricinfo
Amazing stat, really. Although with an awful lot of the best spinners of the last 40 years being Asian, I suppose not quite as surprising as it seems prima facie.

Two decks in blighty most likely to help the big fella. Wouldn't be shocked to see him in the squad at worst.

Unchanged squad but just on this; I think for all his problems Finn could really do with a full season away from England playing for Middlesex, rather than coming into the squad, maybe playing, maybe not, and having the scrutiny of international cricket on his game. Our winter would be so much better if Finn is a part of it and bowling well and I think that should be his and England's goal.
