*Official* English Football Season 2014-15

Yeah Pires was outstanding. Huge loss for France in 2002, particularly given his club form that season.
He was never used wisely by France after that either. Despite having him available France's coaches always seemed to find a reason not to pick him. Santini I think favoured Jerome Rothen and Wiltord on the flanks (for reasons I have never, ever, understood). And then Domenech refused to pick him based on his star sign.

Haha, just had a look on Wiki, and apparently France's first ever manager was an Englishman. Who knew?

Platt must've carried an injury into Euro 96 then. He was definitely captain under Venables in the lead up to Euro 96.

I don't think the gap between Beckham and McManaman is anywhere near as pronounced as you're making out. McManaman was world class and for some reason largely wasted by England. Reckon he was born 10 years too early, I think he was still unfortunate enough to mostly play in an era where British managers hadn't quite learned to trust flair players.
If both players were playing now, McManaman would be far better suited to playing in a modern team than Beckham tbh. Much more versatile, skillful and creative. But at the time, when there was still a spot in most sides for a traditional right-sided midfielder, there was nobody better than Beckham in that role for mine.

His goalscoring record for England was ****ing outstanding for a midfielder as well.

I think we've done this before but he'd definitely be in my 18 for an all time England XI based on players I've seen.

Wiki says Adams was installed as full-time skipper prior to Euro 96 because Platt was no longer considered a regular.

Not that Wiki is a cast iron source I suppose, but that is definitely how I remember things being too.

Yeah McManaman suits a 4-2-3-1, Beckham suits a 4-4-2. Hence my comment on McManaman being born 10 years too soon.

Maybe my memory's playing tricks on me. I definitely remeber Platt scoring ****loads of goals in friendlies when Shearer was going through his 'can't hit a barn door when in an England jersey' phase.

Shearer came really good again after that though.
Blackburn was definitely his peak. He was still very good afterwards but became a bit more one-dimensional, didn't have the same pace.

That was when Fergie routinely told his scouts to "go out and find me a ****ing Shearer".

Yeah, fair enough. I think it is to his credit though that despite his injuries, and the limitations they imposed on him, he remained really prolific, even in the very last few seasons of his career. Bloke was a mega troll too, excellent at winding up opposition defenders and crowds. Must have been horrible to play against, and seemed to get a rise off the stick he got from the crowd. I remember seeing him play against Chelsea in the 02/03 season with Pothas; he wound up Desailly a treat to the point I thought he was about to blow a gasket, and had the crowd in his pocket too - could get a reaction from them whenever he wanted one. Too bad for him Newcastle got beat 3-0, but still.

And now he spends his days trolling Match of the Day viewers. Sigh.

Funnily enough he wasn't a fan when the shoe was on the other foot. Jean-Alain Boumsong bitch slapped him in a pre-season friendly in 2004 and our travelling contingent gave Shearer dog's abuse. Neither Shearer nor Bobby Robson took too kindly to it and had a good sook in the press afterwards.

Makes you wonder how good he could have been given his Blackburn peak came in the aftermath of a major cruciate injury. Still managed to bag almost 100 goals in the 3 seasons after it.

After thinking about Shearer I somehow ended up watching a YouTube video of all of Laurent Robert's goals for Newcastle. Such a funny player. Loved how the only things he seemed to be capable of doing were hitting the ball extremely hard on the volley and taking freekicks.

God yeah forgot Hoddle made Shearer captain

The armband was passed about quite a bit in the Taylor/El Tel years

Haha yeah remember he scored two stupid goals in one game but was awful for the rest of it.

Was watching Premier League years the other day and it had the game when Newcastle beat United 4-3, Robert scored a great freekick in that game and Roy Keane went mad at Shearer and got sent off.

Seems like a strange move, can't see it happening really. The guy's still in (supposedly) prime age for a goalkeeper, will expect to play all the time, and will demand huge wages and bonuses and so on. Would make much for sense to go for Ospina who I suspect would be happy to compete with Chesney, and sit on the bench for a while.

Why would Casillas swap Champions League and second choice for Real for League Cup and third choice for Arsenal?

Watched the United vs Galaxy game and really liked what I saw from Herrera on first viewing. I know the opposition was weak but he has lots of time on the ball and is always looking for a forward pass. Need a CB if LVGs going to play 3 with wing backs in the league. Smalling, Evans and Jones will have me a nervous wreck. Odds of them all staying fit is slim anyway.

The first part of this sentence may go some way to explaining the latter part, tbh.

Maybe. Depends what you want to believe about him.

I wouldn't read too much into pre-season games normally but it was so enormously different from Moyes's start that it's hard not to feel optimistic about it. Van Gaal said in a press conference that they need results like this because otherwise the players will lose faith in the system he's trying to implement and I think that's true.
