In the Counties contracts through the ECB it asks players in that position not to represent his country if he did play for his country he could be sued by the ECB and Sussex for breach of contract.

If there's ever a time that Woakes needed to take cheap poles, it's now. 0/51 so far from 12 is not pushing his case ahead of Stokes.

Audioboo / Sussex batsman Craig Cachopa after day 1 at Horsham v Warwickshire

Luke Wright and Craig Cachopa stand firm to give Sussex upper hand over Warwickshire - Telegraph

Both enjoyed reprieves; Cachopa was dropped on 27 by wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose when he attempted to cut Jeetan Patel. Wright was then given not out after he fended off a vicious bouncer from Boyd Rankin.
It looked to have taken his shoulder and then helmet, but Warwickshire were not happy. When Wright eventually fell – swiping at wide delivery from Barker that he could have left alone – a “Great shot, mate!” from a fired-up Patel sent him on his way.

Cachopa’s innings was the standout, most notably the way he punished every bit of width and every over-pitched delivery.

All in all, he smashed 18 boundaries – 12 in his first 50 runs – and looked remarkably composed for a 22-year old who has gone from averaging 24 in club cricket for Surrey Premier Division side Reigate Priory, to a two year deal at Hove.

Born in South Africa, New Zealand’s Under-19 captain in the 2010 World Cup while also holding a Portuguese passport, he does not count as an overseas player and at stumps stated his intention to qualify to play for England.
Waiting until 2021 before he can play for England, under current rules.

Cachopa makes impressive debut | Mail Online

Both had let-offs against a disciplined Warwickshire attack before prospering either side of tea in front of an appreciative crowd of more than 3,000.

South Africa-born Cachopa plays for Auckland and qualifies as a non-overseas player through his Portuguese grandparents. It is an exotic background but the 22-year-old showed a determination to graft after a sketchy start when he hit several balls in the air.

Sussex v Warwickshire, Horsham, 1st day Report : Craig Cachopa settles into English life | Cricket News | ESPN Cricinfo

Following the standard overseas club player protocol of cricket on the weekend and travel in the week, he was relaxing on a hotel bed in Paris when an e-mail came through from Chris Nash, who had been a teammate of Cachopa's over the winter for Auckland.

"He told me to get off my butt and come play some twos cricket," Cachopa recalled, also citing the prospect of playing at Arundel Castle as another pull to taking Nash up on his offer. Since then he has fallen for the family nature and developmental side of Sussex and is grateful to the club for the opportunity they have given him. If he were to play first-class cricket back in New Zealand again he would do so as an overseas player. For now, he will be back there for Christmas with the family and on the lookout for available spots, at the discretion of Mark Robinson.

So, what of his international ambitions? "The New Zealand thing is on the side," Cachopa said. "At the moment, I'm playing in England, as a local, and I'm trying to qualify to play for England."

Gee thanks for paying Chris Nash and Luke Wright to come here, Auckland. That was money well-spent on NZC's behalf, wasn't it. :p

As hard as ND tries to produce NZ cricket's future cash crop, you've just been jauntily tipping perfectly good crops into the recycling bin again.

I can see him living to regret this decision - it basically rules out any chance he may have had at international cricket.

He might just want to live in the UK.

I have no idea why, but plenty of 20-something NZers seem to want to live there for a few years.

I hope everyone returning for the party at Rob's did not play into his decision, on form he would have been inline for a top 3 contract, with de Grandhomme and Bates ahead of him. Now he would have been shunted a bit down the list and is not guaranteed his number 4 slot in the order which he had earned. Regardless of what people think of his technique he was auckland's best batsman last year, I really hoped that he would come back as an overseas pro, but it sounds like that is not the case either.
