Thirimanne almost getting out every other ball.
Nah, he's just in a purple patch. Let's see how he goes when batting isn't so easyI know it's pretty irrelevant due to sample size issues (10 Tests), but before this game, Angelo was averaging 80 as captain, with 3 of his 4 career hundreds. He's been immense since taking over. Genuinely becoming one of the better batsmen in the world.
TouchéNah, he's just in a purple patch. Let's see how he goes when batting isn't so easy
Yeah that was what I was getting to, another eccentricity of cricketWell there's generally no on-field call to follow for run outs
This is one of the issues with DRS which annoys me. I think this was a bad decision, and should have been fixed. Rather than the third ump just saying "I can't tell, so out", there should be a conversation.Just the session SA dreamt of, every bowler was pretty good, even Tahir kept the runs down in general. The consistent pressure exerted by Morkel, Philander and Steyn led to Sanga throwing his wicket away.
On a side-note, Chandimal was given out because there was no conclusive evidence to overrule the on-field call, right? What about run-outs? Why do batsmen get the benefit of doubt in those cases?
Yeah, it's weird to say the least. I remember when KP was given out in Old Trafford, there was nothing on Hotspot to support the fact that there was nick but he was given out based on the on-field call. Also Root at Perth. This is one of the issues with DRS which annoys me. I think this was a bad decision, and should have been fixed. Third ump : Why did you give that out?
Onfield ump : I think he gloved it.
Third ump : Well, the only contact I can see which might have caused a deflection or a noise is ball on arm. It may have brushed the glove en route, I can't tell. If you gave it on noise or movement rather than because you're sure you saw it hit the glove, then you might want to change the decision. If you're certain you saw it hit the glove, then I can't overturn it.
A comparable situation is where an lbw shout is turned down, because the onfield umpire thinks it hit outside the line. Replays show it hit in-line, but was only just clipping the stumps. I believe it would currently go "umps call, so stays not out", when it should go
Third ump : Why did you give that not out?
Onfield ump : Hitting outside the line.
Third ump : It hit in line. Would you give it out now?
If the answer is yes, then the fact that the next bit is "umps call" can now go in the fielding team's favour.
Basically I want the two umpires to work together to get the right decision, rather than just apply a "protocol".
