There doesn't need to be a VC while MJ and Sanga are still there IMO, saves us the issue of picking one

this is true Max,hence why we can replace Thirri for Vithanage ( only for this game, unless the latter performs). To be honest, as i said before, Thirri has become Anderson's bunny and this will be even tougher for him(and the rest of our batters) on a headingley wicket which I am sure will have pace, bounce and lateral movement(as usual). I still think that Thirri is a good candidate for VC but the needs of the team come first as was shown by Chandi during the T20 WC where he knew the team would be stronger by dropping himself despite being captain.

You don't just drop a guy after one bad test match, I don't care if he's Anderson's bunny, you back him in and show him the faith he deserves given he has been earmarked as someone who is going to be very important to our batting line-up in the coming years. The guy scored 90 odd in Australia 36 hours after stepping off a plane ffs, the guy can play, suddenly dropping him for one bad test does no good at all, way too reactionary

I'm not saying he can't play, and when its any other bowler than Anderson he seems a good player, but the bolded is such a dangerous thing to do. Lots of players not good enough seem to get picked on an one or two innings they play.

but he's being picked for his increasingly solid ODI performances and his gradual improvement in the test arena since his debut, that example I brought up was meant to show how he could cope with adversity (something the selectors stated was a reason for his selection as VC) that is a trait that could help him face his demons against Anderson.

Dropping him would make no sense as even if he's not as good a batsman as Chandimal, he's still a much better opener than Karunaratne.

Can anyone post a link to Broads last over?? Still haven't seen it and can't find it on You Tube.

No one is saying that he can't play, I am a fan of his BUT. the needs of the team must come first. I am sure that he will do well against SA in our next outing however we have to give ourselves the best possible chance of winning this series- after all that's what all of us SL fans want isn't it?

Yeah the point about adversity is a fair one. Anderson also tends to do that to certain batsmen, many of whom have scored bag fulls of runs, so it probably isn't something to unduly worry about especially as they may play like 2 tests ever again against each other.

Unchanged side for England in my eyes. There's no one in the squad to replace. The quicks did a good job at Lord's, there isn't another spinner in the squad to replace Ali and no batters in the squad to replace either robson/cook.

Yeah no point in changing stuff. I would have picked Woakes as I've stated a million times but Plunkett didn't do enough to be dropped.

Needs of the team:

1. Win the next match, we do that by picking our best XI, Thirimanne, a more proven and experienced player than Vithanage is part of that team despite his first test match in over a year being a bad one and struggling against one bowler.

2. To develop younger batsmen to replace the old guard, we do that by showing faith in our young talents, Thirimanne being perhaps the most significant of them, hence we pick them in tough situations like this and back them to do well, that way they learn to find a way to succeed rather than sheltering them whilst using other players as cannon fodder (see Rob Quiney 2012).

Cook tells me that Warne’s criticism of his captaincy is ‘personal’ and ‘something needs to be done’ about it

And while we're at it, Agnew needs to grow a brain for publicising it.

Cook seems to be losing it. And whether Cook is right or wrong about Warne, Cook making this statement can only add to the pressure on himself and the team. Maybe that's what he wants but I doubt it - he's not really that calculated.

Maybe a little reminscent of Benitez slowly losing it whilst liverpool manager and the way he and Wenger eventually when under most pressure reacted to constant trolling from Mourinho/Ferguson diverted from their normal calm and controlled exterior to making rash public statements that make them look stupid. Cook's also made a number of other clumsy statements in the press recently regarding Buttler and others.

Now more than ever Cook needs to score runs and win games because otherwise Warne, KP and others will really stick the knife in.

He's right that it's personal but on what grounds does something have to be done about it?

Strange comment

I mean, more people should be outright criticising Warne for his stupid and repetitive commentary. Is that what Cook wants?
