So a similar situation but the DRS didn't ultimately change the outcome of the game. And offhand I can't remember any other 9th wicket situations where DRS made a difference so it looks like this match was a bit of history: perhaps the first test where DRS indubitably altered the result .When NZ beat Australia, the no 11 (Lyon) was given out LBW twice and escaped with reviews (although it looked very dubious - one looked like it was crashing into middle but the ball tracking made it appear to be missing leg), but then bracewell bowled him anyway.
Yeah I thought Panesar and Anderson, Cardiff 2009, would be there, but that of course was the 3rd innings too. That was the third innings of the match, they batted into what became an insurmountable lead
SB Doull and SB O'Connor 10th wicket partnership of 1 run from 64 balls to draw the match Completely forgot about thisNZ did it against Australia in 1997.
You wonder how much a new voice in the ear of Cook in the dressing room has helped. The plans which were good under Flower when he came in went stale, probably the best captained game by Cook since India.Nice write up from Aggers about England being imaginative, and bowling with real heart on such a flat pitch. Cook did well with inventive field placings, and although the game seemed to be drifting away, the ideas didn't stop coming. They did brilliantly to get so many wickets in the final session, and all the bowlers were excellent on the final day. Anderson was the best bowler on show, Plunkett did a good job, Jordan took a couple of key wickets, and Broad bowled one of the best final overs of a Test match of all-time. I was worried how we'd get on with both Jordan and Plunkett in the side, with neither being blessed with McGrath-esque control, but they were both excellent. Plunkett was the only bowler to get anything out of the surface consistently, and really showed what a difference an extra few mph does on a flat deck. He might not have taken a heap of wickets, but he could certainly do a job as an enforcer-type bowler from now on in Test cricket, nice return for him, and I'd like to see him given a good run.
Yeah, but that was another of those dubious Fleming "lets try and artificially manufacture a result" games. NZ declared 150 runs behind Aus with only 6 wickets down, ffs.SB Doull and SB O'Connor 10th wicket partnership of 1 run from 64 balls to draw the match Completely forgot about this
I read today that Lakmal hasnt recovered sufficiently to make it but I called for Kula to be replaced also due tot the lack of pace from him(irrespective of his ability to swing the ball). I would replace him with Prasad as he can also swing it and it a fiar bit quicker which i think will suit the headingley wicket better. Ihadnt looked at replacing Thirri but i must say i do like the idea as he is Anderson's bunny at the moment and tbh, Vithanage batted well during ODI's (despite it being a differnet format, i feel that good form is good form)- also as you say, he is young and doesnt seem to worried about batting in these conditions..Sri Lanka almost payed for being negative, from Launch to tea Sanag only scored 15 runs. If he and Mathews had been bit more expansive, it would have put bowlers off target and made the other batsmen the life easier.
For the next match PJ will not be fit. Thirimanne is struggling and it's going to get worse. Time to get Chandimal in as the keeper with Vithanage, who is a fearless player. MAthews have to move up to #4. Don't think we need Kule. Lakmal can take his place
Karunarathne, Kaushal Silva, Sanga, Mathews, MJ, Chandimal, Vithanage, Eranga, Herath, Lakmal, Pradeep
I've heard that Lakmal's not fit for the 2nd test so I reckon both sides will play the same XIs
Yeah, I'd just argue that there's less chance of him being replaced in the side in the short-term. Better opener than Karunaratne, and there's less depth in that position than down at #5 or #6 IMO.As much as I love Kaushal, giving him the vice captaincy would be doing exactly the same thing.
