In the first innings where we scored big Roach was utter ****. Second innings he came right and our top order imploded. There was barely anything in the pitch, in fact i would say it was one of those dustbowls that Wagner seems to love.

Yeah i'm always surprised by the amount of top order batsmen who chip the ball straight to fielders too.

Wagner still bowls that rubbish, he just bowls more good balls in-between. Boult already knows how to bowl to plans and hit line and length, (as opposed to Wagner who is seemingly unable to) he's done it in the past and he will do it again.
Roach wasn't any better in the second innings, we just did what we always do and got off to a real poor start because of Fulton and the failure of Williamson in the second innings which meant we went at about a run an over and let the bowlers look like superstars. It makes me laugh that you're bagging Wagner in one breath and praising Roach in the other, considering Roach is about as inconsistent as any bowler not named Mitchell Johnson (pre this year)

and in the next game Boult bowled beautifully and ripped out the heart of the batting in not so friendly conditions, so what?
"Ripped the heart" - 2 wickets in either innings? Wagner out performed him in prematch - better economy, better strike rate, better average - kind of like last season against India.

But, as usual, you guys want to try and argue false points, then you want to make it a "Wagner vs Boult" discussion rather than "Wagner vs Sodhi" or "Wagner vs Fulton" - I'd sooner take Wagner as an opening batsman over Fulton by the way. The reality is, Wagner out performs Boult in conditions that don't suit either of them. Boult out performs Wagner when conditions suit - although Wagner finally seems to be replicating his first class form at test level and given a few years, could become more consistent than Boult.

Boult 17-8-41-4
Wagner 7.5-1-25-1

I really struggle to see how this illustrates your point in any way; not that the bowling figures of one practice game would really tell a compelling story in any case.
Boult - 26 overs, 4 wickets, 85 runs
Wagner - 18 overs, 6 wickets, 53 runs.

First Test?

Boult looked almost as ineffective as Neesham.

Most of us would agree that Wagner should be playing ahead of Sodhi.

Anyone not named Hesson agrees to that, but it seems when you mention Wagner's name and his qualities, people get upset and want to make Wagner seem like he's incapable of performance which is ironic, considering he gave NZ it's best result of the last two seasons.

I am all ears for a Wagner vs Fulton debate - please make your case. I suggested it jokingly earlier. Baz would have to open and Neesham to 5, Watling to 6, and good lord Southee at 7?????? I think that ends the discussion.

Wagner outperforms Boult in games where Wagner outperformed Boult seems to be your point tbh,
2014 so far

Wagner - 2 tests, 11 wickets @ 24.54
Boult - 3 tests, 11 wickets @ 33.2

If I really wanted to make this a "Wagner out performs Boult" - I've got all the statistics, both test and first class to do so.

I'd settle for Wagner at #1 - I'd dare say he'd score more than Fulton's first innings effort and he'd also take catches.

But hey, what do I know, I'm only the one that said Craig would do well on the basis of accuracy and consistency, Sodhi would still look **** despite the pitch being helpful and that ultimately, Neesham's hunger to succeed would see him do a job for NZ at #6. I of course also said Watling would score runs, but that's hardly a big call these days.

pretty much everyone in this thread said those things. When Beamer asked about Craig we all said exactly the same thing.

Most of us also said that Southee would be the main threat.

Most of you said "Neesham isn't a Test #6" and most of you were scared after the first day to say "The Windies have no chance here" - I think I was the only one who openly and blatantly said "After that first day, New Zealand will not only win, but will dominate"

that's because we're not assholes and we actually value the input of the few West Indian posters and don't want this place to become a circlejerk.
