Having missed all of the built-up and havinf missed the morning session, I have two questions:

-Why did the Sri Lankans send the English in? Was it overcast earlier on? Or what?
-What did Plunkett do to be picked ahead of Bresnan, Finn, Onions, Tremlett, Stokes, Borthwick, Rankin, or any half decent spinner?
Green tinge and they had a good start to justify it.

Bowl at 90mph+ on a regular basis this season. Think we plan to use him in short sharp bursts like the Aussies did with Johnson.

I liked that session from Sri Lanka, probably needed another wicket but they got the run-rate under control through Kula and Matthews then kept it there with the rest of the attack, would like to see Herath bowl a fair bit in the final session so he can get some overs under his belt and settle into his work while the pacers try to pick off wickets where they can, Eranga could be crucial if he gets the ball to reverse a bit.
I'd be surprised if they find any reverse on this pitch in the match, let alone the innings.

The pitch was likely to dry up shortly after the start as time went on and so the best time to bat is probably between now and day 3. Putting England in evidently worked pretty well as SL got two early wickets, and they don't look much like getting many now.

I do rate Root going forward but he clearly is playing too much cricket for England at the moment. Its impossible to justify his ODI selection ahead of a plethora of other players (including but not limited to the bloke he is currently batting with).

400+ for Eng is on the cards.. not surprising but remains to be seen if SL can at least match that.

He'll probably take a wicket now that I've said this, but there's very little Kulasekara will do 50 overs in.

Trouble is he was logically picked for the T20 WC as he has the spin option to help so went on that WI tour first. What didn't help was him scoring a ton so he had to come back in that side when he was fit again. If he is going to play ODI's he has to be a guy who bowls 6+ overs each game or he is no use, also he probably needs to open as we have more better options for the middle order. So open and bowl or drop him for the ODI side.

As for test cricket I hope he gets a summer batting in one position unless an injury in a game means a quick change which can always happen. He has been messed around too much and deserves a chance in one slot.

I don't have a problem with Root in T20, think he is a pretty good player in that. ODI team just not for him at the moment though.

Yeah pretty sure I saw on twitter that he has the lowest ODI average of an England bat over the last 12 months. In the 20s IIRC.

Anyway on to the real stuff. They are both going pretty well here, and Sri Lanka bowled pretty disciplined stuff. Get the feeling something is going to happen soon.

Good solid innings from root..reckon he is gonna get a ton here..feel for him as he has been shuffled around the order so much...

Really poor shot but you could see it coming. He had started to feel the pressure as scoring slowed. Decent bit of flight from Herath as well as a good catch.
