No Darren Sammy? He was one of the few guys who came out of the NZ tour with any respect, I thought. I've never understood why so many West Indies fans don't want him anywhere near the side.I agree that would be the common sense short-term move but I really hope they are thinking more seriously about our future than that. Gayle isn't exactly the most consistent of openers himself and we desperately need to develop some decent opening options. Edwards could do the role reasonably but he is a middle order batsman by trade and I think he will offer more value to us long term at number 3 and below.
Having said that, it is a way of getting the extra bowling into the side so I won't be surprised if they go down that route. I personally prefer:
Gayle
Braithwaite
Edwards
Bravo
Shiv
Samuels
Ramdin (c)
TBD (seamer who can bat)
TBD (spinner)
Narine
TBD (seamer)
Reserves - Dwayne Bravo, Seamer
Notes:
- If Roach is fit he walks into the number 11 role
- If Shillingford is ok with his new action and they are comfortable with it (I seriously doubt it) he walks in at number 9.
- I want Samuels to move back to number 6 where he scored all those runs in 2012. He also bats well with Shiv and is excellent with the tail.
He ruins the balance of our side and makes it impossible to play two spinners. He isn't good enough with the ball to be in the xi and doesn't score enough runs to play as a batsman. Just because he bowled better than Best and Gabriel doesn't mean he deserves a place in the side.No Darren Sammy? He was one of the few guys who came out of the NZ tour with any respect, I thought. Yeah I can see your point there. I guess having Bravo as well as him would help the situation a bit - it didn't really work having Deonarine as your part time fifth option when you were out here.He ruins the balance of our side and makes it impossible to play two spinners. I don't mind having him in Test match squads or touring parties as he is a useful utility man and can be a handful on pitches which nibble about a bit. But he should certainly not be a fixture in the side unless it is a Limited Overs match.
I personally think we have some pretty talented bowlers in the region and can do way better than Sammy but we will see what they come up with. If he is still captain of the Test side I will seriously consider boycotting the series as will a large number of fans in the West Indies. I just can't see it happening though, it was just so obvious on the last two tours, even when he had Best and Gabriel to make his bowling look respectable in New Zealand. On the tour of India he basically hid himself for most of the tests and when he did finally come on he was dealt with easily.Yeah I can see your point there. To be honest, I'd still be happy with Sammy at 8 and two spinners as long as it was someone like Roach as the other seamer.
Agreed in regards to JT,especially if he performs well in our FC final later this week. As for Fidel, he's lost a yard of pace but still has the mentality of the express pacer. I think he'd go for too many runs at test level unfortunately so his time may well be up.To be honest, I'd just go for the Hail Mary and throw Taylor back in there. I was also a bit of a fan of Fidel Edwards in that I thought he was an unlucky bowler, but seeing as we haven't heard much from WW and Beamer about him he must've gone off the boil.
Cummins has been very badly treated by Barbados this year and didn't really get a chance to back up last years success because the spinners took all the wickets. In the semi-final he bowled all of 8 overs. What about that Cummins bloke? Jason Holder?
Bishoo was the ICC's emerging player of the year in 2012 I believe, his test record is actually pretty good. He just lost the plot a bit and started to bowl too many long hops and was therefore unceremoniously dumped when Shilly and Narine emerged, I would say he is twice the bowler Ish Sodhi is as he turns his leg spinners far more and has a decent flipper. I genuinely think that, I'm not just trying to wind you all up. Of course Sodhi can actually bat more than a bit which helps his cause but as a bowler I know which one of them I'd choose 10 times out of 10. Therefore I think if he's on form (13 wickets against T & T says he is) he'd be a very useful 2nd spinner.I really, really want Roach to be fit as he's the only proven seamer who picks himself.
Question marks over Bishoo at Test level.
Dwayne Bravo has to play at 6, and will really need to up his game. I'm not sure that he's capable of it, but he doesn't really have much competition from Deonarine. I suppose it can be argued that Deonarine will be more suited to Windies conditions, but they'll be playing two spinners anyway.

West Indian fast bowler Kemar Roach car crash | Street Hype NewspaperGibson added that he is relieved that fast bowler Jerome Taylor is back on the scene to replace Kemar Roach who was recently injured in a car crash.
"Hopefully Kemar will be okay as well and then that gives us a really strong fast bowling line-up to choose from. Then we still have Shane (Shillingford), Sunil Narine and now Sulieman Benn is bowling very well again this season so it looks like we can choose a really quality bowling attack."
‘West Indies cricket wanted to move on, so I decided to do the same’ - Financial ExpressWest Indian fast bowler Kemar Roach has escaped with minor head injuries after crashing his BMW sedan in Barbados on Saturday morning, according to reports. The 25-year-old Roach, once the fastest bowler in the world, lost control over his car on a slippery road just outside Bridgetown.
Roach’s car flipped several times after he lost control near traffic lights. Two wheels of the car were broken off.
Why have you so abruptly decided to end your Test career?
West Indies cricket is under a new dispensation and is heading in a new direction. And after speaking to the selectors I got a feeling that my service would be no longer required in the process of regeneration. I had to take a decision, and this is a decision I thought long and hard about. My wife would be happier as this allows me to stay at home longer.
Is it a decision taken in haste and anger?
No, I don’t have any ill feeling towards anybody. When I got the message that I no longer figure in the scheme of things as far as Test cricket is concerned, I had to accept that. The team was in complete disarray when I was given the job four years ago. I’m proud of what I’ve contributed to the team as a captain. I’ll for ever be thankful to the people who gave me that opportunity. I’ll be thankful to the fans who have been fantastic throughout, and also to the team mates and coach Ottis Gibson with whom I forged a strong friendship.
Using the vault filter in a Kippax way, eh.''Our average against spin during the last two years at home has been 54. We played it well at home but away from home it is closer to 30, so clearly there is a big discrepancy.''
