*Official* English Football Season 2013-14

Norwood's on Fire
I think I said when Moyes was appointed that I felt a bit sorry for him in that he was damned either way this season. Win the league and he did it with the champions, Fergie's team and it proved nothing. Fail to and people will be on his back even though it was of course conceivable that a Fergie-led United wouldn't have retained this season.

What I didn't account for was them being so ****. I mean I say to the United fans I know they shouldn't complain, they don't know what a bad season is. And while it's true on many levels (I've categorically had a worse season than any of you ****s, not up for debate) I'm really just trolling them. They've every right to be upset.

I used the Liverpool comparison but as Furball rightly pointed out, they did win a trophy in Souness's first season, and though they beat a Div 2 team in the final, and the semis and I think quarters tbh, the FA Cup was massive back then, almost as prestigious as the league. And he inherited a team that was genuinely fading, ageing and in need of a rebuild. He of course ****ed that up and only under Houllier did they begin to look anywhere approaching a top side again - and even then it wound up taking another decade, Champions League win notwithstanding.

The situation for United could conceivably be worse. In the 90s sides could recover more quickly, incompetence repeatedly held Liverpool back. One season out of the Champions League is manageable, two could spell a long way back. If Moyes is still there this time next year and hasn't turned things around, whoever replaces him will have the enormous job that he currently claims to have.

They can recover from this season, no doubt, but another season like this and it's a long road back IMO

Thing about this summer is there aren't many managerial openings. Last season Martinez, Pep and Mourinho were available. They really ****ed it up when appointing Moyes as that was the chance to get someone better in.
Van Gaal is the only obvious one but they could at least try and get someone already in a job, plenty of people would still be interested.

Dunno. I managed to avoid being sacked as manager of Arsenal when I finished 7th in my first season on FM13. But that's probably quite realistic.

The press etc... has always had a relatively good relationship with Moyes. Maybe they don't want to flog him whilst he's down. It's about the only thing I can think of which would explain it.
That's more or less it, yes. The press also has a nationalistic hard core that have been asking for years why British managers like Moyes aren't getting a go at the country's top jobs.

There's no substance to it though. It's a case study in how to defend anything without saying anything untrue. "There are plenty of legitimate reasons to attack Hitler, but the argument that he only has one ball is patently untrue. The fact is that taking over the Third Reich was always going to be a difficult job and other leading Nazis must shoulder their share of the blame." Once you've decided to defend someone the facts of his performance aren't relevant at all.

You would be gone I would guess. Got fired after coming 7th with Athletic Bilbao after getting 4th the previous year.

I'm on course to finish 4th with Newcastle after having an Arsenal-like collapse from 1st, despite my only signing being Tony Watt... Am curious to see what next season's expectations will be.

New one is a lot harder. Arsenal binned me at the start of November when I was 6th, top of my CL group and still in the LC.
