The Best of Each Decade Birthday DRAFT

Red

The normal awards that everyone else has
The good thing about drafts is it makes you look at cricketers that you don't know that much about. I'd heard about Phil Mead, (1880s) but I hadn't realised what a wonderful batsman he was. 150 first class centuries can't be wrong

1. Bob Simpson*
2. Gordon Greenidge
3. Zaheer Abbas
4. Walter Hammond
5. Dudley Nourse
6. Phil Mead
7. Shaun Pollock
8. Bert Oldfield
9. Alan Davidson
10. Bobby Peel
11. Allan Donald

12. Chetashwar Pujara
Just quietly, I love this team, very nicely balanced.

The normal awards that everyone else has
Now that the two arch enemies have completed their teams, I think that we should put them side-by-side;

FRED
01. Victor Trumper
02. Virender Sehwag
03. Ted Dexter
04. Brian Lara
05. Kevin Pietersen
06.Martin Donnelly
07. Alan Knott
08. Harold Larwood
09. Johnny Wardle
10. Ted McDonald
11. Joel Garner
Twelfthers Reggie Spooner

CHASINGTHEDON
01. Graham Gooch
02. Graeme Smith
03. Clem Hill
04. Peter May
05. Martin Crowe
06. Aubrey Faulkner
07. Adam Gilchrist
08. Jack Gregory
09. Hedley Verity
10. Alec Bedser
11. Brian Statham
12th Tony Greig
Fred has an explosive top 5 batsman, while Chasingthedon has dour openers, then players from the more classical mould at 3,4 and 5. #Six is pretty even. Each have one of the two keepers usually named in ATG sides, with the purists emphasising Knott's keeping skills, and the pragmatists declaring Gilly adds too much with the bat to miss out. Either is fine in my book- a tie there as well. I think Fred's pace attack has the slightest advantage but once again very hard to split them, but I do think Garner is the stand out quick in the two teams. Spinners about equal imo. Can't split them, but I reckon Fred's team is slightly more dynamic and perhaps more likely to win a test quickly. But over a series, it'd be pretty even.

Nice summation Monk.

I think that the opening partnership of Trumper and Sehwag is the key because both batsman typically score at about 80 runs per 100 balls. If they both get going then the Test match can be taken away from Chaser's team during a single session in the right circumstances. However, they are both risk taking batsman so they are also capable of getting out cheaply thus exposing the middle order. Then things would become interesting!

Yes, Fred is a bit of a flash git.

Seriously, there's no doubt Fred's team would be fun to watch, though I must say I didn't set out to assemble a dour batting side (Gilly notwithstanding). Having said that, there aren't any picks I wasn't happy with, and never felt I was settling - plus I'd love to see my lads bowling at his.

Overall this has been great fun, and once again hats off to Watson for his patient and watchful management.

Thanks AldoRaine.

I'll go for Percy Fender (born 1892) who should have captained England if not for Lord Harris. Hit the fastest recorded FC century in 1920, and was a competent wrist-spinner well regarded by Arthur Mailey. A combatitive character and very good strategist to have in the sheds.

ROUND 12
155. Morgieb - Frank Foster
156. Saint Kopite - Desmond Haynes
157. Fredfertang: Reggie Spooner
158. Camo999: Shane Bond
159. chasingthedon: Tony Greig
160. Monk: Alan Kippax
161. Blakus: Phil Mead
162. ohnoitsyou: Jack White
163. AldoRaine18: John W. Hearne
164. Kyear2: Tip Snooke
165. Howe_zat: Corey Anderson
166. Ankitj: John R. Reid
167. watson: Percy Fender
168. Pothas: 1890s

My picks for Rounds 10 and 11 were going going to be either Clem Hill and Vinoo Mankad, or Lindsay Hassett and Warwick Armstrong. Chasingthedon just beat me to Hill as expected, so I ended up with the latter combo. I'm happy with that because I've scored an excellent captain and managed to unite Armstrong and Mailey again - the first leggie relies on top-spin and boring accuracy, while the second leggie merely rips the ball.

Other nice combinations are;

The South African quicks of Adcock and Steyn - Adcock will open the bowling as Wisden thought him to be the fastest bowler of the 1950s.

The openers Hayden and Dempster - Hayden is powerful and aggressive, while Dempster is nimble, quick on his feet, and likes to play the ball into the gaps.

The middle-order of Harvey, Chappell, and Hassett - No nonsense but aggressive batsman. A very reliable core of stylists.

The keeper/spinner relationship of Healy plus Mailey and Armstrong - a definite strength who will work-over even the most competent batsman on the 4th and 5th day,

And Richard Hadlee - Hadlee is a combination all by himself because he has everything; pace, swing, cut, and an excellent bouncer.

WATSONs XI
01. Matthew Hayden
02. Stewie Dempster
03. Neil Harvey
04. Greg Chappell
05. Lindsay Hassett
06. Warwick Armstrong*
07. Ian Healy+
08. Richard Hadlee
09. Dale Steyn
10. Arthur Mailey
11. Neil Adcock
12th Percy Fender

Don't reckon your middle order is dour, just the openers! But Gooch and Smith would be very effective.

Watching May and Crowe bat together would be a joy for purists, and Clem Hill is all class.

Just Pothas to select his man.

With a bit of luck I'll have the voting thread up Sunday arvo :)

So this is my team. Might change the order

Barry Richards
Alastair Cook
Eddie Paynter
Sir Everton Weekes
Kumara Sangakkara
Vijay Hazare
Frank Woolley
Michael Holding
Sydney Barnes
Courtney Walsh
Lance Gibbs

Sub : J W Hearne

I shifted Sanga down the order because he will be the keeper.

Thoughts?

I am satisfied with the bowling unit, it is balanced with all of them complementing each other and providing variety but made a few mistakes while picking batsmen

Great lineup of batsman, and a superb bowling attack for sure.

Michael Holding does have a top score of 55 runs in the No. 8 poistion, but the tail is still one of the longest on show.

Overall, a very fine team AldoRaine.

Thanks mate.

And yeah, that's a very long tail.
