The Best of Each Decade Birthday DRAFT

Pothas

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
Another drinking partner for Beefy and a bit of an off field captain and part coach Arthur Carr

01. Roy Fredericks
02. Warren Bardsley
03. Hashim Amla
04. Kumar Ranjitsinjhi
05. Frank Worrell
06. Keith Miller
07. Ian Botham
08.Jock Cameron
09. Shane Warne.
10. Frank Tyson
11.Muttiah Muralitharan

12. Arthur Carr

As always with my draft sides the openers are probably the weak spot but I don't care, just could not resist the Miller and Botham combination or having the two greatest spin bowlers.

AJ XI

01. Geoff Boycott
02. Vinoo Mankad (5)
03. Ken Barrington
04. Sachin Tendulkar
05. Steve Waugh (6)
06. Patsy Hendren
07. Les Ames +
08. Imran Khan * (1)
09. Vernon Philander (2)
10. CharlieTurner (3)
11. Clarrie Grimmett (4)

12. John Reid

Strengths: Balance. The middle order is dour and may prove impenetrable. The batting runs deep until number 9. In bowling department, Imran Khan's firey bowling is well supported by guile of Philander and Turner. With Carrie Grimmet, one of the greatest leg spinners, and occasional help of Vinoo Mankad, the spin attack is high quality too.

Weakness: Lack of an explosive batsman, except for Tendulkar if you assume his 90s avatar.

Thoughts on my team?

I don't think that your openers are a weak link at all. Bardsley is often overlooked because his averages in England are below par. But so were Trumper's and most other Australian batsman. The point being that Prewar English bowlers were exceptionally good at exploiting wet uncovered pitches, especially SF Barnes.

If I remember rightly, Bardsley's strike rate was in the mid-60s, which is excellent for an opener. We know that Fredericks was aggressive. So what you have at the top of the order Pothas is two openers who are also capable of counter-attacking the bowling and getting the innings away to a good start more often than not.

Your biggest problem is that you're always going to have to win the toss and bat first as I don't rate your chances of getting your two all-rounders to the ground in time for the start of play

Barrington and Boycott batting together would be some sight.

Seriously though, You have assembled a very good team. Very very strong batting line-up and a bowling line-up which could pose all sorts of threat on a given day.

Your bowling is brilliant. The best in the draft in terms of variety. And agree with Sheldon regarding openers. Probably, you could have done with someone like a Gilly or Walcott or Andy Flower as the WK as that would have improved your batting further. Otherwise, its still one of the best teams in the draft.

Don't think I finished the draft particularly well, and that lineup probably isn't very flashy. Think the core is pretty good though.

I'd switch Foster for Broad if I were you - massively underrated due to his career being cut short

Just need captains for the following teams because I'm not sure;

Aldo
Fred
Morgieb
Having just finished writing a feature about him I have a few misgivings, but will hand the armband to Lord Ted - I shall have a word with him before he starts though

Thanks Fred.

SK, I think that your tail needs tweaking because Tayfield was a handy bat. What about....

08. Tayfield: Ave = 17
09. Trueman: Ave = 14
10. Lohmann: Ave = 9
11. Waqar: Ave = 10

But both Trueman and Lohmann had first class hundreds which is why I have 'em ahead of Tayfield. Probably could push Tayfield one place up to 9th.

Thanks. Just out of interest Aldo, is Lyon your home town? If not, where did you grow up?
