Guptill made a big impression, on and off the field, in spells with the county in the last two seasons and has said how much he enjoyed his time with the club but he resisted their approaches to play in the t20, initially because he said he wanted a break from cricket after the Champions Trophy.
Derbyshire still hoped they could make him change his mind and stay in England a little longer but now head coach Karl Krikken has admitted defeat and is looking at his next options, with the start of the competition less than four weeks away.
“Krikk spoke to Guppy during the Surrey game and was told he’s decided to go to the Caribbean Premier League, so unfortunately that means he won’t be available to us,” said chairman Chris Grant.
“What he said to us was that if he had played, he would have come to Derbyshire and he has more or less guaranteed he will come next year if the timings work out.
“On the back of the performances he has had for New Zealand this week, we would have loved to have had him but at least he’s not going to another county. It’s not as if he’s got a better offer to play at Somerset.
“He still likes Derbyshire and there’s no doubt that he’s still come back another time but all the agents are saying that you have to be seen in this CPL in order to put yourself in the shop window for the IPL and that’s his goal, ultimately, because of how lucrative that is.”
