There was no respite for the beleaguered Indian cricket team as curator Brett Sipthorpe lifted the covers at the Basin Reserve yesterday.

Four days of Wellington rain has hindered pitch preparations for the second and final test, starting on Friday, and all but guaranteed the surface will be a green, seamers’ paradise.
‘‘I don’t expect they’ll be too happy when they see that,’’ said a laughing Sipthorpe, as the rain eased to finally allow some work yesterday.

Sipthorpe prides himself on producing wickets with pace and bounce and New Zealand had requested ‘‘same again, please’’ to the pitch on which they romped to an innings and 73-run victory over the West Indies in December.
Darren Sammy inserted the hosts but after the early loss of the openers, a Ross Taylor century guided the Blacks Caps to 441 which proved more than sufficient as Trent Boult (10-80) ran amok.

The world No 2-ranked Indians are yet to post a win on tour after being thumped 4-0 in the ODIs before falling to a 40-run defeat in the first test.

But their pace attack of Mohammed Shami, Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma proved they can thrive in New Zealand conditions by skittling the hosts for 105 in the second innings at Eden Park.
Sipthorpe said it was a ‘‘guarantee’’ that the toss winning captain would bowl first on Friday.

‘‘It’s had good pace and bounce in it this summer and basically we’re aiming for exactly what we had for the West Indies one.
‘‘That was nice and bouncy and had a little bit of nip around, which suits the seamers.

‘‘It just depends on what the weather brings us. If we have to take a little more off we will, but we don’t want to lose our pace and grass cover is pace.
‘‘We’ll do everything we can to try to keep as much grass on as we possibly can.’’

Sipthorpe said Jeetan Patel’s success for Wellington this summer showed that spinners could succeed at the Basin.

But their major weapon would be bounce, rather than spin.

‘‘With the weather we’ve got leading into this one, there’s almost no chance of it drying out to bring spinners right into it. But Jeets has taken a couple of four-fors here for Wellington and I think the bounce will be the key.’’
Jesse Ryder and Doug Bracewell were yesterday fined an undisclosed amount and dropped from the New Zealand squad after a late-night drinking episode on the eve of the first test.
They were replaced by Canterbury batsman Tom Latham and Otago allrounder Jimmy Neesham, neither of whom have played a test.

Latham, 21, has already scored 2341 first-class runs at an average of 41.8. The left-hander will play if Taylor’s second child is not born before the test.
‘‘Tom’s an incredibly exciting prospect and is constantly pushing for selection,’’ selection manager Bruce Edgar said.
‘‘If called upon, we’re confident he’ll take the opportunity with both hands.’’

Neesham could play if selectors decide Ish Sodhi’s leg-spin is surplus to requirements at the Basin.

Meanwhile, New Zealand head of cricket operations Lindsay Crocker said Ryder and Bracewell had damaged their relationship with the selectors by drinking till 3am on the morning of the first test.

‘‘The New Zealand selectors place great emphasis on qualities such as personal responsibility, trustworthiness and dependability and will continue to do so with our encouragement,’’ Crocker said.

Who the **** is going to be first slip? This might actually be an even bigger issue than the loss of Taylor's batting.

Fulton into first slip? McCullum? Williamson?

I presume they'll just move the rest of the cordon over one, so Fulton will become first slip, Southee to second, maybe McCullum or Latham to third? I reckon Kane will be left in the gully. I agree it is a worry.

Southee can't field at second slip to his own bowling though, and it's not good to be changing the second slip every over.

It'll probably be Fulton, McCullum, Anderson.

Agree that they should leave Williamson at gully because he's freaking awesome.

Ross hasn't actually been a great slip fielder for the last few years, he drops some mind blowingly easy chances although he took a couple of great ones against India int he first match.

Fulton is a capable first slip, having fielded there a lot for Canterbury, alternately Tom Latham.

Nah he's been awesome for the last year or so.

Before that he was having a rough patch.

What about Rutherford, I remember when he first made the test side Cumming said that he had a good set of hands (he would say that though). Does he field at slip for Otago?

We have confirmation then. Taylor out, Latham in. Sodhi out, Neesham in.

Glad to see they've gone for Neesham. With Taylor out, and the inexperienced Latham in it's nice to have the depth in batting that Neesham now provides.

BCCI to buy New Zealand to reduce overseas losses under Dhoni’s captaincy

Chennai. Immediately after MS Dhoni became the Indian captain with worst away test loss record with 11 overseas defeats to his credit, N Srinivasan BCCI in a damage control exercise called an urgent meeting in the city.

In the meeting it was unanimously decided by BCCI president N Srinivasan that they would be purchasing entire New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

This move is aimed at reducing the number loses under Dhoni’s captaincy abroad. With Sri Llanka and New Zealand both in BCCI fold and thus under India, Indian team’s loses under Dhoni would go down to 9 and he would no longer hold the dubious record.

This way the record would be safe till India’s next overseas test series against English team in July this year. However by then BCCI is confident of purchasing even England.

BCCI has also rubbished claims of it doing this to shield Dhoni who also captains CSK team owned by Srinivasan.

“This is an important move to keep the spirit of the game as well as test matches alive. To begin with we are experimenting with smaller countries and may move on to bigger countries if it works well for us,” said a senior BCCI official.

“Imagine the kind of team we would have if we have batting might of Sri Lanka, bowling like New Zealand and er.. talent of Rohit Sharma all rolled into one,” he further added.

In order to make this feat possible Rajiv Shukla, the mega negotiator has already gotten in touch with his government at centre as well as embassies of both the countries to come up with a contract.

Rajiv Shukla is confident that New Zealand and Sri Lanka both stand to gain from this move.

“To begin with this can ensure employment of uncapped players of both countries in IPL. Also with matches played there being counted in India, tickets sales in stadium are bound to go up,” Shukla said victoriously.

However if both countries don’t agree to BCCI’s demand, they also have a Plan B up their sleeve.

They will then outsource the job of documentation and paperwork to prove that New Zealand and Sri Lanka were already part of Indian Territory to Robert Vadra who is naturally gifted with the talent to lay claim on any land.

Meanwhile BCCI is also having a word with Prashant Bhushan of Aam Aadmi Party fame to see if some territories of India like Eden Gardens, Wankhede etc can be ceded to neighboring countries so that matches won there by India can be counted as overseas victories.

Latest reports also suggest that N Srinivasan BCCI is in process of buying Supreme Court of India as well after the latter indicted Gurunath Meiyappan in IPL spot-fixing case.

Disappointed that BMac is not moving up to 4.
