Not trying to jinx anyone, but all the comments on CW I've ever read have been critical of Vijay so I wasn't expecting much. But he looks a bloody useful opener to me. Patient, leaves well, but even in ultra-defensive mode he still scores off the bad balls. Perfect guy to wear the bowlers and ball out for the likes of Kohli and Sharma to come in later.

The fact he did well last game and they didn't want to make a hard call.
That could only be it, because unless you are top class, being an attacking spinner on a pitch that isn't turning against India is going to be difficult, especially when you can't contain very well

Jackers is obviously bored with this partnership; he's brought up some really weird conversation topics out of the blue.

Cricket commentary would be close to unique on that front though; the length of time it goes for and the sedateness of the game really allows for them to just have a bit of a chin wag about whatever they like. I can't think of any other sport like that.

EDIT: Actually I think it was Mike Haysman just now with the gloves thing.

Watched a bit of bowling once and it was along those lines.

This is a cracking Test. Really enjoying it, and not just because this commentator keeps calling India's no.4 "Curly".

I actually think Vijay will do a fair job seeing off the new ball. He's a good leaver of the ball and he did that pretty well against Steyn when he was bowling a crazy spell back in the 2010 SA series. Has to protect the middle order from the new ball where most of our runs will come from, which imo he's capable of doing. Dhawan on the other hand is likely to struggle imo, especially against someone like Philander who's going to keep tempting him to go for his favourite shots.

It's only 2 tests so I doubt any of them will be dropped even if they fail in the first game, but having Gambhir as back up would have been nice, especially since he did so well last time they toured SA.

Gonna keep quoting this so hard. Suck it Vijay haters.

I actually had golf typed in originally, but while it can be more like that than other sports I don't think it really quite matches cricket on that front. The fact that they can swap cameras to other golfers taking shots all the time means they don't have that white space we get in cricket in between overs and with the bowler walking back to his mark.

Indians just need to sit here. Floodgates should open after tea as these quicks can't bowl all day. Presumably Kyle Abbott and Beuran Hendricks will come in at Durban.
