I really like Fulton's approach - not concerned that runs are hard to come by, not impatient, happy to wait for someone like Gabriel to come back on and bowl some looseners that can be hit for four. Determined not to gift his wicket away.

I would like it more again if he was not completely incapable of turning over the strike against the more accurate bowlers too. Apart from anything else it can't help his batting partner.

Alright then PEWS, I'll indulge you - if not Redmond, who would you have picked to bat at 3 in a one-off Test before KW comes back?
I would've picked Brownlie. There are another handful of players I would've picked before Redmond too. I care far less about short-term form than most people though - to me there are many better indicators of how you're likely to go in a Test than how you've gone in your two or three domestic games this season - so if people disagreed and would've picked Redmond then that's fine.

I didn't think it was a great selection but it wasn't exactly terrible. My big opposition isn't to the selection, but to the romanticism of it as if New Zealand have called up a long-time domestic hero who has earned his selection based on massive weight of runs like a Sinclair or a Fulton - or indeed even a Cumming or a Broom - and that it's fabulous that such a player is getting a Test. The thing about that is that if they had done that I'd be really keen for it, but Redmond's a level below that in terms of domestic run-scoring (no matter which way you look at it - he either just hasn't been as good, or if he exclude the early part of his career then he doesn't have the longevity) and the carry on annoyed me because I feel it cheapens the occasions when something like that does happen. I loved Fulton's recall even though I thought it was a terrible idea (seemed to have been in decline for a while, and there was the whole McCullum-not-opening thing) because that's exactly what it was. Redmond being the best option for a one-off Test is probably just as sad as it is a feel-good story because he has no redeeming features other than his short-term form.

If cricinfo is correct. Fulton has 46 off 117 balls BUT has 29 off 33 balls v this bowler (Gabriel)

FFS Cribb. Redmond is >>>x1000>>> than Mathew Sinclair. We know you like Skippy, but jeez - the guy's retired, he ain't getting a call up.

I quite like Fulton. PEWS was making the point that Bangladesh would always take a batsman that will score loads of runs at home even if it means he'll average 20 abroad. I think that it's the same with Fulton. We know he's going to only score runs against poor bowling. Although his weaknesses are fairly patent, he can score runs when runs are available. And we simply haven't found batsmen who will consistently cash in like that.

TLDR, flat track bullies are better than 1/30 test bullies.

He's working on those flaws as well. The commentators discussed earlier he's trying to go straight forward rather than across then forward and he's batting on middle and off so he knows where off stump is and he defends balls outside off right under his eyes.

 If he was still playing and done his usual thing of averaging 70 odd for the first part of the season he just might've got the nod, too. :(

Yes, which inadvertently shows that if the opposition doesn't have a pressure-release-valve bowler he can be tied down without too much difficulty.

hmmm, this is more a paint job than an actual correction, but that's probably the correct option at this point in his career.

He still absolutely struggles with turning over the strike but whatever. I'm not one of those people that's going to blame the guy at the other end for a wicket falling, unless we're talking limited overs.
