LIONS squad v Dolphins on Sunday

The bizhub Highveld Lions are featuring exciting debuts for the franchise in the team’s first Momentum One Day Cap match at Senwes Park on Sunday. The team face coastal team, the Sunfoil Dolphins in this match that starts at 10:00 in Potchefstroom.

The game features the bizhub Highveld Lions debuts for Devon Conway, Matthew McGillivray and Shaylen Pillay. “We have had some injury challenges of late. Cricket, like any other sport is bound to have its hiccups but we’re excited about the fact that some youngsters will get the opportunity to step to the crease. These are players that have been working extremely hard to earn their place in the side and it is now up to them to fully utilise this break,” said Skipper, Stephen Cook.

“The team’s preparation has other wise gone according to plan and we are really excited to get going . The India experience has been valuable for the guys that went and I believe that this is going to give us an advantage in this year’s competition. There is after all a trophy to defend and we definitely do not want to share it again this year,” Cook added.

Dwaine Pretorius and Neil McKenzie are each recovering from a side strain that they picked up during the CLT20 and Gulam Bodi’s fractured hand is healing according to schedule. Other injuries are Cliffe Deacon (knee injury) and Pumelela Matshikwe (shoulder injury).

Coach Geoffrey Toyana is confident that the injured players will be ready to join the squad soon. “These injuries have definitely had an influence on preparations but we are not weaker because of it. We have made sufficient provision for situations like these in our pipeline and my players are ready for the battle ahead,” Toyana said.

The squad for the match against the Sunfoil Dolphins are: Stephen Cook (Captain), Temba Bavuma, Devon Conway, Quinton de Kock, Eddie Leie, Christopher Morris, Matthew Mc Gillivray, Ethan O’Reilly, Aaron Phangiso, Shaylen Pillay, Jean Symes, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Rassie van der Dussen and Hardus Viljoen.

Tickets for the game are available at the stadium.

About Devon Conway
22-year old Conway is a left-hand batsman originally from Johannesburg and matriculated from St John’s College. His first class debut was in 2009 and in List A matches, Conway has maintained an average of 42.16 and a high score of 132. Conway returned home after a short stint at the Sunfoil Dolphins and has almost 50 first class matches under his belt. He spent the off-season in England at Kearsley cricket club in the Bolton cricket league.

About Matt McGillivray
Another Johannesburg born cricketer, McGillivray, is 23 years old and matriculated from King Edwards School and studied at the University of Johannesburg. He is a right-arm medium fast bowler that made his first class debut in 2010. He has played 12 List A matches with a high score of 67 and an average of 35.6.

About Shaylen Pillay
19-year old Pillay has represented his country at SA under 19 level and was also part of the squad that represented the country at the under 19 World Cup. He made his debut for the Gauteng Strikers in 2011 as a right-hand batsman and has scored 256 runs at an average of 39.2 with a high score of 77*. Pillay matriculated from King Edwards School and was also born in Johannesburg.
Always good to see some new blood. Some other good one's like the 3 quicks busy hitting batsmen heads and bodies and sending them too hospital in the first two games of their provincial season in Sean Jamison, Matt Arnold & Junior Dala for Gauteng.

Great performance for the youngsters in Conway and Pillay to support Symes. So good to see because you look at young de Kock and the Gauteng youth squads (u19, u17 & u15) coming up for December and they have some really talented young batsman coming through.

But back to the game, tough pitch that is up-and-down. 171 may be defendable with Morris, Tsotsobe and Viljoen.

Alexander bowled with great pace, got up to the mid 140's at times, Abbott and Savage drove exceptional lengths and Frylinck with his liquorice all sorts off cutters and leg-cutters.

First of all, got to say that the pitch was pathetic at Potch. Early season pitch possibly but still.

Vaughn van Jaarsveld and especially Dave Miller were class though. Good signs for Dave this season if that is how he is going to bat.

Good to see Conway playing firsts, was playing county 2nds over the winter, future clouded.
That is for sure. Played Somerset 2nds for the second time. Did so 2 or 3 years ago as well like Kyle Abbott did. A lot was expected of Devon while young and at 22 now its good to see him mature and scoring the runs to get this opportunity. Hopefully he takes it, looks a really good touch player.

My summation of the Momentum One-day cup after the trophy is shared two seasons in a row ! Cobras again but this time the Titans instead of the Lions.

COBRAS

You look at their batting line-up and there isn't any big hitters bar Ontong and Kemp because Levi missed the entire competition with a slipped disc rumoured to be caused from losing a lot of weight to get fitter to push his international aspirations. Their base was extremely solid with Puttick, Vilas, Van Zyl and Vallie. There is probably no batsman I enjoy watching more than Stiaan van Zyl in domestic cricket. His elegance of hitting a boundary is just too much whether its a cover drive, back-foot punch or a short-arm jab pull it says international level. But rotating strike seems a problem still for him and he needs to keep working on that part of his game. Overall perspective the mix of experience and youth is probably the best in SA. Young spinner Dane Piedt got better as the comp went on, brilliant drift in and huge off-spin to get a few stumpings. Langeveldt led the attack with young Lizaad Williams and all-rounder Shaheen Khan who got his Cobras debut. Kemp's bowling has been the standout for him, little bit of nibble off the seam and good length has been difficult to get after. Left-arm quick Beuran Hendrick's injury was a big blow but he should be back next week for the 4-day competition which starts.

WARRIORS

Top order batting was a huge problem for them. Davy Jacobs and Jon-Jon Smuts didn't hit the form expected of them. Ingram and Jonker were the standout batsmen. Jonker is a chunky fella who can hit a long ball. Prince didn't play much after getting rest from his Lancashire stint. But I do believe they need to find the right balance to bat around Ingram. There is talented batsmen in the Eastern Province which I will get into soon. I don't know why Simon Harmer isn't getting better results in one-day cricket with the ball, when I watched him he really was unlucky at times but he when he bowls the normal off-break I'm not sure he bowls it quick enough for limited overs pitches on our wickets. His batting was superb though down the order but its fine by me if he just keeps producing with the red ball. Bowling always been the strength of the Warriors. Parnell started off on fire with a hundred and a five-for before heading to UAE. Theron and particularly Birch had good competitions. Gqamane seems more suited to the red ball so we will see what the plan is for the future because they do have other young quicks coming through as well.

DOLPHINS

Morne van Wyk was a good purchase for them. Can win games if he comes off at domestic level. Been doing it for years. Jono Vandiar has fallen so far I can't believe it. Once a teenage star of the Dolphins and supreme talent but nothing more than a fat lazy guy who just throws his hands at the ball. Zondo was pathetic batting up the order bat found his spot at 6. The heart of their middle order batting has been Vaughan van Jaarsveld who flattered to deceive this comp and Dave Miller who they missed greatly when he went to UAE. But stepping up was young Cody Chetty. Wrists to die for. Certainly a player to watch. So Daryn Smit gave up the gloves (considered the best glovemen in the country) to bowl his leg-breaks again. He did alright with the ball without being fantastic but certainly gives it everything, class fieldsman and continued to contribute with the bat. Frylinck bowled his cutters and all that but I think the Dolphins need to move on from him especially as he hasn't smashed those huge 6's of his that he used to for a while now. His replacement is quite clearly Calvin Savage. Started off nicely but then broke his collar bone. Only back in January I think. Big talent but needs to stay on the cricket field. Onions blew hot and cold. Brought in to provide guidance to younger bowlers expecially if the impressive Kyle Abbott got a Proteas call-up. So hopefully working well with some of the youngsters behind the scenes as the pro. Best I've seen Craig Alexander bowl. Klusener seems to be getting the best out of him like he did with Abbott last season. Alexander bowled with pace, aggression and intensity. Great to see.

KNIGHTS

Always going to be a tough season. Lost the services of Morne van Wyk. Elgar missed a chunk of the comp as in UAE. So were relying on Reeza Hednricks and Rilee Rosoouw. The former didn't have as good a season as expected. Players like Lefa Mosena, Gihahn Cloete, Rudi Second, Pite van Biljon and 19 year-old Diego Rosier all got 50-over comp debuts with the bat/gloves. Their experience lies in their seamers and Nicky Boje but unfortunately missed Johan van der Wath and Dillon du Preez for a period in the comp. Quinny Friend bowled well though. Ryan McLaren is playing some of his best cricket, scoring runs and taking wickets. Could have done with him.

LIONS

Very disappointing. Batsmen didn't score runs consistently and bowlers were erratic. Probably the two standouts for me were Rassie van der Dussen (although needs to find a new gear when he gets in) and leggie Eddie Leie (so vibrant in everything he does, bowls a good googly and slider, yeah impressed). Internationals like Quinton de Kock didn't stand up in the first four games he was there and Alviro Petersen when back from UAE didn't do much, he hasn't ever struck me as being as good against the white ball as he is against the red one. Time after Neil McKenzie is starting soon so they will have to plan accordingly. Debuts were given to young talents like Devon Conway and Shaylen Pillay. Hardus Viljoen takes wickets in his 2 come back spells but needs to stop leaking runs. Same with Morris (although bowled with a slight injury mostly), seems to be very erratic with the white ball. Seems to show much more discipline with the red one.

TITANS

Absolutely brilliant. They always seem to find talent from somewhere. They've lost so many players to the Proteas (even Davids and Wiese at the end) or injury (Rudolph and de Lange at the end of the comp) or due to exhaustion (A.Morkel) but found a way to win 4 or 5 on the trot to get to the final when it seemed impossible. Kuhn focusing on being just an opening batsmen will push for higher honours now. Scored hundreds to win crucial games for the Titans. Was supreme with the bat. Mosehle played some great innings down the order after officially being the keeper now. Behardien chipped in. 50-over debuts for opening batsman Francoisle Clus (in for Rudolph), Qaasim Adams, Graeme van Buuren & Cobus Pienaar (Fanie de Villiers nephew) with the bat. One team in South Africa who certainly believe their spinners can win them the game. We know what a competitor Roelof van der Merwe is but Shaun von Berg really got me to stand up and take note. He doesn't seem to have as a good a googly as Imran Tahir and Eddie Leie but can he fizz a leg-break like Shane Warne with that in-swurve Shane used to get. Never mind look like him as well ! Absolutely crazy ! de Lange played 85% of the comp and then injury struck. Not sure on the severity.

Yeah, Stiaan van Zyl might get a look-in.

I think Stephen Cook should get a go too, he's been in good nick lately.

Agree, Cook always seems to slip under the radar. Its probably never too late and who knows if he keeps scoring runs.

He will lead the invitational XI in the 2-day game vs India which is without Titans and Dolphins players due to a Sunfoil Series fixture between the two.

Absolute road in the Sunfoil Series game in PE. 600 played 500 etc. I think there is a balance that needs to be found here. There is too sporty and there is this here. But in saying that, great Cobras debut for 24 year-old seamer Dane Paterson. He out bowled Kleinveldt and Hendricks and got a five-for which is impressive. So good to see them drop Johann Louw for him. Not a big believer in playing experience for the sake of it and at the Cobras Kemp and Langeveldt have deserved to be there playing and guiding the younger players through. When Paterson and young Travis Muller are knocking the door, it is their time. One of the benefits of the provincial system is there are more games so you play a lot of cricket as a young player honing your skills. With the bat, Puttick with 242 for the Cobras and Prince with 198 for the Warriors.

In Kimberley, it seemed like it did a bit. Great batting from Temba Bavuma and Rilee Rossouw for their sides. Rossouw making a habit of scoring hundreds on tricky pitches. Did so in the winter against Australia 'A' or India 'A' as well. Other stand-out was young Corne Dry's five-for. Good to see his hard work paying off.

Pity this game didn't happen. Dane Paterson and Corne Dry were called up to replace the injured Andrew Birch and Chris Morris. So would have been interesting how they did after impressive provincial wickets got them there go at franchise cricket and both picked up 5-fors last week. The good thing about provincial cricket is there is about 16 3-day games in the season plus the limited overs so you play a lot of cricket as a youngster. Once you get into franchise cricket you play less games but more testing of course. So you are always working for that next level and as big a population as we have the provincial system is crucial to keep our young players in SA with semi-pro contracts.

Good batch of quicks coming through and playing provincial cricket at the moment (not including players available for SA u19 next year)

COBRAS

Test duty: Dale Steyn (30) & Vernon Philander (28)
First choice: Rory Kleinveldt (30), Beuran Hendricks (23), Dane Paterson (24)
Senior pro like Charl Langevedlt (39) playing limited overs cricket. Always had great skill level so of benefit to younger players.
Youngsters:
WP: Travis Muller (20), Brendan Young (21)
Boland: Lizaad Williams (20)

* Also have all-rounders like Justin Kemp and Shaheen Khan. Philander, Kleinveldt, Muller and Young can all hold a bat. WP seem to prefer young Muller who swings it away at good pace for the longer version and Brendan Young who is taller and can drive a back-of-a-length or go really full for the limited overs version. Skiddy ,Lizaad Williams, already contracted to the Cobras and done well when called upon.

WARRIORS

First choice: Wayne Parnell (24), Andrew Birch (28), Rusty Theron (28) and Aya Gqamane (24)
Reserves: Basheer Walters (27), Gurshwin Rabie (30)
Youngsters:
EP: Anrich Nortje (20), Sisanda Magala (22), Solo Nqweni (20)
SWD: Marcello Piedt (20)

* Parnell is an all-rounder and Gqamane can hold a bat as well. Can see some of the youngsters jumping the reserves soon. Nortje a bit of tear away quick and Solo has pace as well and bowls back-of-a-length jag-backs and should be back from injury soon.

DOLPHINS

First choice: Kyle Abbott (26), Craig Alexander (26), Mthokozisi Shezi (26)
International pro like Graham Onions was important, especially if Abbott got an international call-up.
Youngsters:
KZN: Calvin Savage (20), Craig Kirsten (19) & Daryn Dupavillon (19)

* Robbie Frylinck and Savage are the all-rounders and Abbott isn't the worst either with the bat. Savage is 2 months into a 3 to 4 month broken shoulder. Dolphins physio doesn't want to rush him as he is still young and plenty years ahead of him. Kirsten should be available in the new year after back stress fracture in January this year for SA u19.

KNIGHTS

First choice: Johan van der Wath (35), Quinton Friend (31), Ryan McLaren (30), Malusi Siboto (26)
Reserves: Dillon du Preez (32), Tumi Masakela (26)
Youngsters:
Free State: Corne Dry (20), Duanne Olivier (21)
Griquas: Jan Frylinck (19)

* van der Wath, McLaren and du Preez can all hold a bat while Dry, Olivier and Frylinck aren't mugs. A lot of experience in the bowling department because of the youth in the batting but it looks like the will be well covered in the next few years.

LIONS

First choice: Lonwabo Tsotsobe(29), Chris Morris (26), Hardus Viljoen (24)
Reserves:
Older Gauteng: Pumelela Matshikwe (29), Ethan O'Reilly (28)
Younger Gauteng: Sean Jamison (23), Junior Dala (24), Matt Arnold (25), Matt McGillivray (23)
North West: Cliffe Deacon (33), Dieter Klein (25)

* Morris, McGillivray and Deacon can all hold a bat. I reckon some squad players like Matshikwe, O'Reilly and Deacon may be on their way out this season. With some of the younger guys mentioned plus young SA u19 quick Kagiso Rabada coming through.

TITANS

Test duty: Morne Morkel (29)
First choice: Marchant de Lanage (23), Ethy Mbhalati (32), Rowan Richards (29)
Reserves: CJ de Villiers (27), JP de Villiers (24)
Youngsters:
Northerns: Ryan Cartwright (21)
Easterns: Vincent Moore (19)

* Got all-rounders like Albie Morkel and David Wiese. Young Cartwright currently competing with Titans contracted players CJ and JP de Villiers and shining ahead of them which is exciting because I reckon they could find another young tear-away to support a de Lange.

The u19 National Cricket Week starts on Monday. Prestigious event that has been going since 1940 and a large number of Proteas have come through this system and played SA Schools.

Will be interesting to see the performances and so on with the u19 CWC next year in Feb. Just got to hope Durban's weather is kind.

Sunfoil Series Round 4 update:

Cobras v Knigths at Newlands
Lions v Dolphins at Senwes Park
Warriors v Titans at St Georges Park

Hardus Viljoen (Lions) & Farhaan Behardien (Titans) banned for one game due to swearing at an opponent.

Titans had announced their 12-man squad before Behardien news so he will prob fall out: Kuhn, le Clus, Rudolph, Davids, A. Morkel, Wiese, Mosehle, van der Merwe, von Berg, Richards, Mbhalati

Pite van Biljon comes in for Dean Elgar for the Knights while Ryan McLaren replaces young Corne Dry who got a 5-for in his 3rd franchise game last time round. Harsh.

Paul Adams hopes Robbie P and Kleinveldt are flown to CT as not involved in test so will announce squad tomorrow.

For the Lions, de Kock will bat 3 while Tsolekile will keep. Waiting on news if Tsotsobe plays and Viljoen replacement.

Warriors have serious injury issues and will only announce squad after practice tomorrow. Davy Jacobs (ankle), Andrew Birch (ankle), Colin Ingram (calf), Christiaan Jonker (groin) & Rusty Theron (shin). Young quick, Anrich Nortje, could make debut and seamer Sisanda Magala could get another run. David White has been in great form since he got in the Warriors team at the top of the order and with Michael Price and Jon-Jon Smuts struggling they will be looking over their shoulders with players like Eddie Moore , Colin Ackermann and James Price in good from for EP. Parnell also comes back.

Interesting day one of franchise cricket.

Stiaan van Zyl continued to shine for the Cobras, just missing out on his third hundred of the Sunfoil Series. Definitely must be discussed a possible replacement for the waning Jacques Kallis in the future. Obviously he's not an authentic all-rounder, but he bowls some useful seamers and a first-class 5-fer suggests he isn't too bad.

Quinton de Kock, in his first franchise game for the Lions in many a month, scored just 3 before nicking off to Kyle Abbott. I'd like to see him in the Proteas test team, but it's clear he needs a season or two to mold himself into a white-clothes batsman. David Miller also scored a composed 109 runs.

At St. George's Park, Michael Price scored a career-best 181. I've seen him make sporadic appearances before, but usually he made an insignificant 15 or 20. Aya Gqamane seems to have suffered second season syndrome. After such a promising 2012/13 season, he now is averaging 66.80 with the ball and 10.25 with the bat.
