I think we've seen enough of rhino now to call all the haters in the combined xi (and various other pre match places) thread out now right?

With Bell scoring 3 tons in this series, and 4 tons in his last 5 tests against Australia, surely its time to ask if Burgey was more wrong about Bell than Spikey was about Hilfenhaus.

One would have thought Spikey and Hilfenhaus could never be challenged. But Burgey is seriously tasting.

I always imagine Burgey waking up and hearing that Bell scored another ton to be like that clip from Downfall where they're giving Hitler bad news.

Bell shouldn't have been having to prove people wrong this series.
If he'd failed then I think there would definitely have been questions about his place.

He really needs to go on with it though, 4 Ashes tons and his highest score is 115. His problem, 1st series aside hasn't been scoring runs, it's been scoring significant runs. Bell goes to 150 and it starts to look like 3-0.

yeah he's definitely got a bit of the mark waugh's about him , in that it's usually himself that gets him out, especially after he's already 'done his job' in making 100+

Yeah, the fact that he has five more fifty plus scores in Ashes cricket than Michael Clarke shows it. Would probably have a DoG great innings if he had the Cook at his best mentality.

Still a bit of a raw deal to say his runs this series have lacked significance though. What his centuries have lacked in quantity they've more than made up for in the difficulty of the circumstances and importance in the match context.

nah for sure, his hundreds have been really valuable no doubt - but there's a massive difference, especially in really testing conditions, between making 105 and 175, and turning one of them into a really big one would have been invaluable, especially in test #1

Especially when you consider Bell has more tons than Australia do combined.

Yeah, I'm in massive agreement in general. I'm just not sure this particular series is the best example of it.

Still a chance for him to turn it into a big 'un tomorrow. As Furball said, it would all but win the series.

Yeah fair point, could have worded it better as it was more a reference to past series than this one.

Actually, when I say significant I meant quantity of runs, not importance. He's passed 50 17 times in 39 innings yet doesn't yet have a massive, really defining innings.

I think it's a bit unfair to compare with Cook in many respects. Having spent a large part of his time batting at 5/6 he has been routinely stranded/batting with tail/declared upon before he would have had the chance to get the massive scores.

Definately.

Wrote on here at the start of the series that Bell had to step up and if he doesn't then his place in the side should be at least under threat, didn't quite imagine he would step up like this, its been brilliant to see, well pleased for him, would be awesome if he could get another ton at the Oval, he would join Bradman, Sutcliffe and Hammond with 4 tons in an Ashes series if he did, not to shabby company to be in, though i'ld trade that for a 150+ here.

Not sure anyone ever doubted his ability, just his durability.
People were suggesting he wouldnt make a perfect fitness xi in the thread I mentioned. Seems questionable.

I'll admit to doubting Rogers and Bell somewhat here tho.
