There's a 3rd option; if you're worried about the ability of your bowlers to back up in consecutive Tests without getting crocked, 'player management' dictates selection. Starc, although he's been more available than others, is still needing to have his workload managed. Obviously I'm not in the set-up but guessing that was a factor

Just so we're all on the same page, since Agar is the second best batsmen in the team, he should be batting 4, right?

One of the few things left to look forward to in this series from my angle is the selection of Jackson Bird. Its probably just a CA marketing exercise to heighten my interest for the 4th test.

OT looking burned apparently. Some funny marks appearing on the pitch. Location hasn't been confirmed but I'd be kind of guessing around the left hander's off stump. Cook says its ok to prepare pitches that advantage the home team. Well yeah I guess but this seems the curatorial equivalent of running on the pitch.

it was just jouno's on twitter i think, and they have been wrong about the makeup of the team for every game so far.

I wrote it in the stats thread, but in the last 6 Tests between Australia and England, we've scored more at our second attempt each game, including uncompleted innings. Go through our scorecards and our first innings scores have been pathetic. We've actually been passable in our second innings in those games.

If you only include completed innings its been 21 matches (Edgbaston 2005) since we scored more runs in our first innings than our second.

Personally I think it's fine within the boundaries of what's normal for the region (taking into account weather conditions of course). Anything outside that is dodgy as ****. People always say "Well every country doctors wickets to suit their own team", but that's rubbish. Home ground advantage is the advantage you get from having grown up in the natural conditions presented by your country's climate, not preparing a wicket to provide a specific advantage to your own team.

I'm not saying they have done this in this case, but if it's well outside the boundaries of what you'd expect normally then it's not good. I would be surprised if they have though, as England shouldn't need to do anything special to their wickets to beat us.

That is exactly right. The preparation issue should be consistent with conditions you actually expect in the host country. No one can complain abt turners in the sub con or bounce in Oz and seamers in Eng for example. However a dry spinning deck in the wet north and patches in convenient places looks suss. You expect the odds to be against you when away from home but this looks like rigging the game.

Faulkner in for Watson

I'm actually really interested in how CW would feel about that. Spikey and PEWS unhappy, TopCat happy.
