No doubt about it. Mkhitaryan would have been a real coup for them, as it is you think they are going to have to buy players on the level of Aspas and hope that they will improve. Rogers will have done a remarkable job if gets them anywhere near the Champions League next year with Arsenal and Spurs (Bale depending) both likely improving next.

There's plenty of talk going round that it's Arsenal playing games with Real Madrid, and attempting to force them into making a bid so that they will speed up the sale of Higuain, which would make sense.

How the whole situation impacts on Liverpool is pretty funny though. It's a pretty damning reflection on how other clubs and players now view them, struggling to keep their top players, creeping further and further towards the mid-table. That they have lost out on Mkhitaryan because they can't offer him the chance to play in the Champions League just further reflects how their stature and allure is probably at the lowest it's been since I've been watching football.
They're not a big club anymore.

It really does make you realise how much clubs are reliant on the Champions league I suppose. Liverpool have been a serious threat in the major competitions far more recently than Arsenal have, but yet a couple of years of no Champions League and they are right down in the doldrums, whereas Arsenal (supposedly, at least, and time will tell on this one I suppose) remain a reputable and 'big' club.

Nah, nowt to do with that, they've been floundering with one ridiculous appointment after another, whilst shedding money like it's going out of fashion. In the end if your team is **** you stop being in the Champions League, it's not the other way round.

They're becoming the new Newcastle.

I haven't been following it that closely. What are the latest rumours around Thiago Alcantara and Man United?

It's quite incredible how little I am up for the new football season. I think I'm losing all love for this game.

How much game time is Schwarzer likely to get at Chelsea? The reactions here to his move have been everythign from it being terrible because he won't be playing, to it being a great move becaue the club plays in all the big competitions.

Yeah, he's clearly a stop-gap reserve because they don't want to bring back Courtois from Atletico and have him sat on the bench.

At this stage of his career I very much doubt Schwarzer himself cares if he's playing regularly or not tbh. He's not got long left in his career, so he's probably seen the chance to get a bumper payday for doing very little. Wise move imo.

Yeah, sensible move for both parties. Turnbull is seriously bad as I saw first hand at Brentford last year, having a veteran to step in when needed is ideal.

Burgey, heard Cech has missed 10 games in the last 5 years. Fair to say Schwarzer won't be getting much game time coming into the WC.
