Kuggs leaves, looking to make his NZ debut in shorter forms within the next 12 months. Claims he's not very satisfied with his 32 FC batting ave. Munro has really raised the bar for the instinctive sluggers on the circuit, obvs.

Sigh. Shame, that. How does he fit in with ND's needs given they seemed to have much greater depth in bowling stocks than Wellington anyway.

They haven't really got that much depth tbh. The West Iindies are here early in the season so there'll be very little Southee or Boult, they'll fit Kuggs in where Bradley Scott/Tuffey/Arnel were in their shorter forms sides. Pamment sounds keen on giving Tony Goodin more of a run, Verma, Baker, Cody Andrews, Corey, Sodhi to probably be a bit of a liability for another season.

A big squad announced, but the absence of Raval and Butler in particular has me a bit puzzled. In fact, I'm not sure who's going to open the batting in that side: Carlchopa and Latham? Feel a bit sorry for Nethula as well, given how much better he was than Astle in the PS.

Guess I'd go for a side of:

Latham, Carlchopa, Broom, Mitchell, Anderson/Munro, Neesham/Astle, Ronchi, Bracewell/Milne, Sodhi, Henry, Gillespie

Ugh, horribly weak in batting. Latham averages 30 in FC, Carlchopa and Broom are both out of their preferred position, Mitchell has one season under his belt, and either Neesham or Astle would be batting at least one spot too high at 6. The other possibility is that the selectors intend to continue with the Ronchi-as-opener experiment, which would be ridiculous, so hopefully we can rule that one out.

Looks a good tour itinerary. I too am confused by lack of openers - should take Raval/Flynn or just give Rutherford some more practice. Agree too that Nethula is surely still a better spinner than Astle and Sodhi at this point, though I guess Astle is picked on all-round potential (score some runs ffs) and Sodhi as the new Daniel Vettori teenage spin prodigy.

For the 3 and 4 dayers reckon I'd go:

Latham (reluctantly as I'd prefer he was in the middle order too)
Cachopa
Broom
Mitchell
Anderson
De Boorder
Ronchi
Astle
Bracewell
Milne/Henry
Sodhi

There's so much bowling in the side with Anderson, Mitchell and Cachopa, that De Boorder can play as a specialist bat. Plus we're New Zealand and that means we like to play three wicketkeepers whenever possible. I don't rate Gillespie's chance of getting back to international level as very high so he misses out, though would no doubt get a run in 1 or 2 matches anyway.

The batting becomes even worse once Broom, De Boorder and Neesham leave for T20 CL and are replaced by Devcich, Kuggle and Ellis.

Oh, very good to see Adam Milne there. Although it will be largely unhelpful conditions, perhaps they can get a local to teach him how to reverse it.

A promising Manawatu cricketer has escaped conviction after driving drunk because a conviction would have seriously damaged his prospects of playing overseas.

Manawatu cricketer and pace bowler Bevan Small faced a charge of driving with an excess breath alcohol level of 826 micrograms, more than double the legal limit of 400 for an adult.

He was caught driving in central Palmerston North about 3am on June 24 last year.

The case was shifted to the Wellington District Court where he pleaded guilty and asked for a discharge without conviction on the basis of consequences to any international career he might pursue.

Heh, was just about to comment on this. Looks like Dougeh might have some competition next season for the title of biggest drunken **** up in the CD ranks. Though they've both still got a long way to go before they catch the king.

I presume that by international career in this context, he means getting a contract with a County, IPL team or even a club team overseas rather than playing international cricket for the Black Caps.

Even then I think the claim is somewhat dubious.
