we need a spinner tbh
... and all possibilities are outside prospects at best, just like all other categories other than fast bowlers. Sodhi may have potential but really the chances of any leggy becoming good enough to reach test level are very low - under 10% I'd say.

imo 80% chance that Williamson will be our best spinner for the next five years

yeah I liked what I saw of Bennett's remodeled action.

There should be massive competition between Bracewell, Wagner, Bennett, Milne, McCleneghan, Henry and Wheeler for that 3rd test bowler slot.

Wagner has just done enough to be considered the incumbent, but they really should be including another prospect alongside Bracewell in the squads. Or if Bracewell isn't tearing through domestic lineups before the Bangladesh tour, he should be given a spell.

NZ only needs an Iain O'Brien level bowler to turn into a top level, well-rounded attack. Bracewell should've been that guy but he's not performing and there are heaps of guys who should be getting a shot.
You're right that Wagner puts a floor beneath that third-seamer spot, and Bracewell has been left in the dirt beneath that in the last few months. That place is there for the taking.

As a third seamer to complement our two opening swing bowlers there are a few archetypes to draw upon:
- the Alan Donald true quick (this is the dream scenario but everything would need to go right for Milne to get there);
- or the reliable bounce and seam bowler (Henry and Wheeler have high arm actions so some potential there, though afaics they rely as much on swing as seam at present. Maybe Milne too if he's not going to bowl super quick or Duffy down the track.);
- or someone good at reversing the ball later in the innings (this is supposed to be Wagner and Bracewell, though really you'd expect any swing bowler worth their salt to be able to get reverse if the ball is in the right state).

'Running in hard all day' also a desirable attribute in any of the above, though unsure of size of most of above players' hearts wrt Peter Siddle's or ability to play the nuts-block like OB.

Most likely scenario though is that our third seamer in the near future will be someone who relies on swing to a similar degree to Southee and Boult, but is not yet as good. That's not bad though does leave us in an awkward spot if the ball's not swinging.

The guys that I keep hearing NZ really needs to become guns are Milne and Duffy tbh (atm you'd say Duffy can suck in his breath and mix it with the men for about four overs max). There's going to be some good thoughtful non-jock elements in Duffy, along the lines of an O'Brien, which will serve him well as time goes on.
Interesting. A few brain cells to rub together wouldn't go astray when it comes to progressing from the top of the domestix fast bowler pile to international level. Though you have to get to the top of the domestix fast bowler pile first. Obsessive, oddball types surely over-represented among international fast bowlers past and present too (not saying that Milne or Duffy are necessarily those - you made me think of it by mentioning OB).

I wonder if it's time to put both of the mercurial, slightly depressive and porky players in pink, see how they get on with their reluctant training up there. ;)

Only very friendly and coachable little puppies for Siddons and Arnel from now on. Get rid of anything and anyone that may be giving off the musty smell that's plagued Wellington cricket for twenty years.

Bennett also belongs in the "true quick" category IIRC. I thought Bracewell was morphing into a bouncey seam bowler but others seem to think he was always a genuine swing bowler.

Nah, even before his injury he was 145 max (and generally 137 to 142), so more a member of the Gillespie/O'Brien 'faster end of fast-medium' club than the Milne 'genuinely fast' bracket.

Will be keen to see how Duffy progresses this season. Agree that he could be very important to New Zealand's prospects in a few years time. Currently the drop-off from Southee and Boult down to the rest is horrendous. An accurate, mid to high-130's bounce bowler would be the perfect way to round out the attack.

Maybe it's just because we hadn't seen him for a while but Bennett looked Milne pace in his comeback. I guess coming back fresh with only ten overs to bowl could have contributed.

and his new action does make him look less awkward.

I don't rate Bennett's chances of staying fit and bowling with any sort of consistency very highly tbh. Unlikely to do enough to earn a test spot imo - perhaps an ODI specialist at best.

I don't even know if Bracewell knows what sort of bowler he is at the moment. A bit of a Daniel Flynn in that he reigned himself in when first selected for NZ, and had a taste of success based on that reliability and discipline and willingness to follow a plan... but doesn't seem to want to build on that, instead wanting to revert to his flashier, more attacking instincts.

Ha, why on earth did that article keep the Ken Rutherford bit in. Geenty then said to himself 'oh yeah, Hamish', but he'd got an extra 50 words out of it by then. Craig Cumming I think would have a good chance though ftr.

I don't think I can mourn Littlejohn after the Nicol and Munro Test caps in particular, but his focus on subcontinental A tours being essential yearly staples was quite good I felt, if that was him.

I think it was big john that got the A series up and running. It is hard to see what Littlejohn actually does now, as it appears over the last few months that McHesson makes all the selection decisions.
Quite an unhealthy situation imo especially if you compare it to what has happened accross the ditch.
Cumming would complete the Triumvirate... I think he has enough integrity to see that and decline it.

Render unto McHesson the things that are McHesson's...

yeah pretty sure it was John Buchanan who set up the A tours.

I think Buchanan's been doing some good stuff and I just don't see what the point in appointing him is if it's not going to be long term. He's the freaking high performance director, that's not a short term position with short term outcomes.
