Evidence is there for all to see over the last 20 odd years. England fans have traveled in massive numbers supporting what was a **** team for the most part. Still payed their money and sung their songs right to end of every thrashing.

Sydney, 2007. At the end of that test England fans were the last to leave the SCG.....Thousands of them singing....

We're 5-0 down, but we're having a laugh.

Now lets compare that to the Aussie fans during 2010/11.........

I think you get what I'm saying:happy:
Look I think its getting beyond silly when you start saying our fans are better than your fans. If people stop posting its usually bcos someone else is capitalising on their team's good fortune a little too much.

Bairstow goes for KP unless one of the present middle order can open in Compton's stead.

100% agree with you, it is totally silly, because it is a non debate......Eng fans > Aus fans.

We can argue till the cows come home whether Siddle is better than Broad or if Bell is indeed a spud......all debatable points. On the question of who's got the better supporter group, it's not even up for discussion......Aus lose.

Back on the topic of this thread, has to be Bairstow out for KP. I think Root will end up being an England an opener, but now is not his time......more than happy for him to cut his teeth for a while at 6 before he makes that move. Tough for Johnny as it could easily be Compton that gets the flick.

I actually really want to go and number all the threads in their titles. Would no doubt get in trouble though. :(

Got to be Compton.
Who would open then?
Can't add much more to it than this, really.

But, being that kind of ****, I will anyway.

When the squad for our Indian tour was announced most folk (self included) assumed Root was going to open because he was the only specialist in the squad (Cook excepted, obvz).

Compo somehow got the gig, didn't make an absolute horlicks of things in the sub-continent (only one 50 in 4 tests tho, but) and scored a couple of tons in NZ, one under some real pressure in the second dig of the first test, but since that second test he's scored <50 runs in total in six innings.

If Bairstow gets a bat today and makes some runs I think his case looks pretty compelling. I personally thought he was hard done by when he didn't keep his place for the first test in India after twin 50s versus the Saffers in the third test. His leg side preference might concern the purists, but being a predominantly on-side player hasn't really harmed Pietersen's career so far, has it?

I never ever ever wish injury on any player but a broken finger to Compo a week before the first ashes test might not be the worst thing to happen as long as KP is fit and ready.

It's a great thing that our biggest concern is an opener with 2 hundreds to his name and an ave of 36..........that's better than every batsmen bar one that last took the field for Australia.

Compton averages under 32.

About as crap as Hughes and Cowan then isn't he?
Honestly, I would probably take those two over Compton. Might not be a huge difference between Compton and Cowan but I think Cowan has demonstrated he is more likely to get runs in test cricket. Hughes for all his issues still has a load more potential than both.

I really don't see the issue with Root moving to open, it is what he does and where he is going to bat. Yeah it is probably likely that he will fail a few more times there than if he was at 5 or 6 but he will score more runs there than Compton and that is the issue. Bairstow has not totally convinced yet but he is young and clearly has some talent, I think the batting looks a lot more balanced with him at 6 and Root at the top.

Thought Compton's stoic defence was admirable in the Indian series and he earned the right to play in the New Zealand tests but it has become increasingly obvious that the sort of innings he played in India were not because of conditions, they are how he is going to play in most circumstances. After these five tests against New Zealand I think you have got to say that he is not quite good enough, yes h made two hundreds, but you know, so did Peter Fulton.

Well if we are using stats as the sole guide Australia has Clarke, Warner, Hughes, Cowan, Watson, Wade, Haddin and Starc averaging higher than two of England's current top 6.

So yeah rubbish attempt from adders and I would drop Bairstow.
