AFAIC rather than banning Watson for the third test they should have simply stripped him of his vice-captaincy, that would have served as a better and a more sensible punishment for him under those circumstances.
Now if, within one week of the whole homework episode Watson is leading the side tomorrow, then it basically makes the team leadership look weak and clueless. Unfortunately they have left themselves no other options and if Clarke cannot manage to play tomorrow, then it would give the haters one more reason to mock the team.

nah **** haddin is the option, not only a superior player to watson hes 10x the leader watson will ever be. for the selection panel its basically a choice of which makes us look like the bigger dickheads, making the guy we dropped captain or the guy we suspended a week ago for not doing his homework captain.

If the Aussie selectors have any sense in their heads they would ask either Haddin or Cowan to lead the side if Clarke can't make it, they could come up with an excuse, saying they don't want to add the extra burden of captaincy on Watson after all that he has been through in the last week (or some other crap on similar lines) and they just want to allow him to concentrate on his game, but since they are the ones who have provided Watson with the initials 'vc' next to his name, they most probably won't contradict themselves any further and would allow him to lead the side in Clarke's absence.
