The ATG ODI World XIs Game

With the benefit of hindsight, I reckon we should have gone with the following:

01. Sanath Jayasuriya
02. Sachin Tendulkar
03. Viv Richards
04. Dean Jones
05. Andrew Symonds
06. MS Dhoni+
07. Lance Klusener
08. Shaun Pollock
09. Wasim Akram
10. Joel Garner
11. Muralitharan
That's a very good team Himannv. But it highlights some philosophical questions when selecting ATG ODI teams;

(1.) Do you go for the ODI specialist who is not normally an ATG player - such as, Dean Jones, Andrew Symonds, MS Dhoni, and Lance Klusener?

OR

(2) Do you go for the 'Gold Tier' ATG player, but with the slightly inferior ODI record - such as Adam Gilchrist and Brian Lara?

Personally, I prefer to select 'Gold Tier' ATG Players because I make the assumption that you need top class batsman to take on top class bowlers. And vice versa. Obviously, I make the odd exception (eg Michael Bevan), but in the main I think that the team is more solid with the vast majority being 'Gold Tier' ATGs.

Incidently, this study is interesting;

Therefore,

01. Sachin Tendulkar
02. Adam Gilchrist
03. Ricky Ponting
04. Viv Richards
05. Brian Lara
06. Michael Bevan
07. Kapil Dev
08. Richard Hadlee
09. Wasim Akram
10. Joel Garner
11. Muttiah Muralitheran

My ideal team (today) would be....

- A. Gilchrist+
- S. Tendulkar
- R. Ponting
- B. Lara
- V. Richards
- C. Lloyd
- K. Dev
- W. Akram
- A. Donald
- J. Garner
- M. Muralitharan

Would be comfortable with swapping Donald for Hadlee or Imran to strengthen the batting a bit, but Donald was a great ODI bowler, and deserves recognition.

Hessey has a better strike rate and was an amazing finisher.
It's true that Bevan has the higher average (54 v 48) but Hussey the higher Strike Rate (87 v 74).

However, Bevan chose not to 'power-hit' because he didn't need to. He rotated the strike and merely coasted Australia to the required total. So, it's not a matter that he didn't have the 'fire-power' at his disposal, but rather chose not to use it in order to minimise risk.

But when he needed to clear the boundary he was almost as good as Viv Richards IMO.

Here is the scorecard featuring Bevan's 185 (132 balls) against Akram, Vaas, Kumble, Murali and Razzaq.

He leaves Jayasuriyah, Tendulkar, Mark Waugh, Jacques Kallis, and Lance Klusener for dead.

I make that (although Marcuss might find differently);

MB = 9
IK = 7
MSD = 6
KD = 5
LK = 4
CL = 2
SP = 1
MH = 1
AF = 1

Note: Sobers1 voted twice for some reason.

Including Watson (version capable of bowling 10 overs) and Dhoni gives a side pretty amazing batting depth, especially if you add the best bowling all rounders in as well!

- Watson (5)
- Tendulkar
- Ponting
- Lara
- V. Richards
- Dhoni +
- Lloyd/AB DeVil/Hussey/Bevan
- Kapil (3)
- Imran (2)
- Hadlee (1)
- Warne (4)

That's a gun combo. The only changes I'd really make are to replace Bevan with Lloyd or AB DeVil, but's that's just my own little personal preference. The bowling attack is lethal. Garner, McGrath and Murali are very hard to score off, and that means Imran and Wasim are likely to strike more often than normal. Might include Kapil in place of Imran also, just for some added firepower.

Anyways, here's my prediction for the 2nd XI....

- Jayasuriya
- Hashim Amla
- Dean Jones
- Zaheer Abbas
- MS Dhoni +
- Lloyd *
- Klusener
- Kapil Dev
- Hadlee
- Warne
- Donald
