Not sure that Shaun Pollock can be described as a new ball bowler in the context of an ATG team? Peter yes, Shaun no.

Why? He opened the bowling in almost every game he played and was successful doing it.

Perfect when combined with Donald imo.

A medium pacer with boring figures against Australia doesn't excite me.
He was a good foil to Alan Donald early in his career, and to Ntini later. Kept one end tight, built pressure, let the more aggressive quick take the wickets from the other end.

Stats from the Past: The best new-ball pairs in Test cricket | Highlights | Cricinfo Magazine | ESPN Cricinfo

Shaun Pollock and Allan Donald formed possibly the best new ball pair of all time.
Don't get me wrong, Shaun Pollock is an excellent bowler and would make a great first change bowler if I wasn't going to pick Procter as the superior bowling allrounder.

But in my humble opinion both Steyn or Adcock would be significantly more formidable new ball partners to Donald if given the hypothetical chance.

yeah... Pollock was mindblowing in the first half of his career... averaged something like 19 after 70 matches at more than 4 wpm iirc...

his bowling lost penetration after that period and he became more of a container but for around 7-8 years he was up there with Donald. His career was very similar to Waqar i think
Will have Pollock in the side but Steyns a better opening option imo.

Donald and Steyn

Pollock is actually my first bowler picked but I want him at first change and we were told to pick the opening bowlers, so yeah.

really late

that's the exact thing i thought
Yeah, it gives us one spot that could theoretically go to anyone. I see us picking Kallis + Faulkner + four other specialist bats and a keeper, and Pollock/Procter + two other specialist seamers... but the spot that we'd usually think of as the spinner spot may end up going to someone else entirely because of the extra bowling Kallis and Faulkner already give us. Looking at how the West Indies team ended up I'd not be surprised if both Pollock and Procter made the cut and Faulkner ended up the lone spinner.

I think the difference between Proctor and Tayfield is smaller than the difference between Holding and Gibbs though.

Procter has some serious fans on CW though. I actually expect him to be picked over Pollock, and with so many bowling options in the side already people may feel the need to stack the batting a little rather than pick another specialist.
