Made slight correction. His best phase of 50+ tests had highest average of 75. He was unstoppable back then. That run really was ridiculous. He was an absolute phenomenon for those 4-5 years.

I mentioned that Viv Richards was supposed to have had such sharp eyesight that he could pick out individual faces in the crowd. "Ricky likes to spot fights," Hussey said. "He quite often comes down between overs and says, 'Hey Huss, see a couple of blokes having a go over there'..."
To sum it up, he did what Amla has done this last 18 months for another 3 years on top. Amazing, and still people slag him off.Mar 2002 to Nov 2006

Not even close. More like 8 months rather than 18 months. To sum it up, he did what Amla has done this last 18 months for another 3 years on top. Amazing, and still people slag him off.
That's what made his decline so surprising. He had been on top for so long you'd thought it wasn't merely a purple patch but that he was on another plane. To sum it up, he did what Amla has done this last 18 months for another 3 years on top. Amazing, and still people slag him off.
Comparison is pointless. Hash is a talented cricketer but ponting is a whole new level altogether. To sum it up, he did what Amla has done this last 18 months for another 3 years on top. Amazing, and still people slag him off.
I agree, just a stat like that might sink in to the doombrains heads who try to criticise him.Comparison is pointless. Hash is a talented cricketer but ponting is a whole new level altogether.
Sadly old father time catches up in the end even for great players. Has with Tendulkar by the look of it and will with Kallis at some point. That's what made his decline so surprising. He had been on top for so long you'd thought it wasn't merely a purple patch but that he was on another plane.

Some quite ridiculous catches in there...
No.2 is probably my favourite catch of all time... to catch a leading edge at such close range with your weak hand ,when the ball has come straight off the bat, not a bat-pad, takes freakish skill and reflexes
Every generation has their own players, and while I may prefer Trumper, O’Reilly or Harvey, Ponting is mine. To me his batting says more about Australia than the flag, national anthem, Australia Day or even the baggy green.
Ponting is the Australia I grew up in. But it’s now just a memory that an old man will tell a young boy.
