*Official* New Zealand Domestic Cricket Season 2012/2013

The best way to develop peeps is to make them earn their stripes and play to win; not give them handouts for one reason or another. It would be absurd to bat van Wyk at seven given the success he had last season.
I call it investing in the future. Both CD's and New Zealand. It is a good idea to have at least a couple of prospects in your team and give them a chance to contribute. Young may not even get a dig this inning.

Anyway like others had posted if KNB had been 7 and young 6. I wouldn't be making this point.

Getting on a soapbox for a second - for some reason, and Kruger is not one of them, the plunket shield has a number of "mind of matter' players. Who are actually quite useless technique/skill/and aptitude wise but through sheer self belief ton up against 130km bowling on a regular basis. They seem to come in to bat in premium batting spots around 5 and 6 when the opposition is tired and the ball is old and make hay every time. I don't see how what purpose we are serving by creating an environment for these players to succeed and flourish. Gareth Hopkins leads the way in this division of player and just reckon younger guys should get his spot in the batting order for the future of cricket in general.

We've made a decision we can only afford to have 6 teams in NZ domestic cricket. To give youngsters a fair go then there has to be some selection bias in their favour.

C Chopper is certainly finding life to his liking in CD. All four tons in last seven innings and also as a married man, incidentally.

Hurricane, can't agree with you champ. KVW needs to be batting as high as he can for both the sake of CD and NZ. For CD's sake, he's in their best five batsman hands down. Should be above KNB. And certainly a U20 guy who scored no runs at the World Cup (minus a minnow). Yes he's a certain pick in the Test side but he needs to become a trusted member of it and offer bigger runs where he is.

And Astle bowling 12 overs to Johnston's 41 is a very interesting one, purely based on a scorecard. There's certainly a lot of domestic players who can't see the merit in Astle's selection

Derek de Boorder obviously not one of them though; probably expects him to open the batting with Guptill.

Wagner getting Stewart lbw first ball must have been a goodie.... video of it anyone?

And Johnston is new to me - what does he bowl and is he any good?

He's a young offspinner. Haven't seen him bowl so can't comment on his quality but you don't get many 22 year old specialist offies playing in the Plunket Shield, let alone taking five wicket hauls, so that alone probably says a lot.

I remember Johnston bowling quite well in an OD/T20 game vs South Africa earlier this year. I think he actually got Amla out as well.

Haha quite right. He would have taken a quiet satisfaction in his 95 from behind the stumps.

Johnston is a decent offie, bowls flattish. If you look at the scorecard, four of his five wickets were left handers and three of those four were bowled or lbw. So I'd suggest he was bowling round and darting it to a certain degree.

Get upped overnight. I'll do three short videos, Canty's late slump, Johnston and McCord's wickets, Sinclair's play and misses vs. Dane Hutchinson. :p

Fair Dues.

Isn't he skipper now. So maybe that has something to do with it.
That in itself seems an odd decision - his record really isn't that flash. I don't think it's ideal to have a captain with question marks over their place in the side.

Played for NZ U19s in the world cup we hosted at the start of 2010. Was also the Young Cricketer to Lords in that same year I believe.

Good bowler, don't think he's known for turning it massive though. Has always been handy in limited overs stuff.

I'm glad McCord has got a couple of wickets. With Rankin now English, there's a vacancy in the Irish bowling ranks-and Trent Johnston can't be going on for much longer. McCord was the pick of the Irish "A" bowlers in 2011, so a decent season in New Zealand has got to put him in with a shout of a full call-up. Which could obviously in turn cause problems for his selection in New Zealand domestic cricket.

Funny fella, Murtagh-never really does great in OD/T20. I still can't believe Ireland don't pick him more, though. I get the feeling he gets punished for being a bit of an opportunist qualifier. Whatever happened to Peter Connell? He was looking OK but disappeared off the cricketing map last year. EDIT: ah, here he is: http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/s...ll-is-hungry-to-earn-irish-call-16169903.html

And it sounds like Trent is giving it one more year: http://www.cricketeurope4.net/DATABASE/ARTICLES5/articles/000017/001747.shtml

Back on topic-so Ryder is considered Wellington's 4th seamer ahead of Elliott, eh? I'd have expected Elliott to bowl a few overs at least unless he has a knock that's preventing him from bowling.
