**Official** South Africa in England 2012

Hmm. UDRS would've been handy in this match Sky are showing. Some... interesting decisions to say the least.
The 1998 match at Leeds?
Didn't see the highlights, but there were some truly awful hometown decisions in that series. Almost exclusively from the Pakistani umpire (Javed Akhtar, maybe?) rather than the English ump, it must be said. Can't recall if it was that test or the one before but there was a delivery from Gus that Kallis basically middled into his pads and he was sawn off.

Watching this, you can't help but feel Paul Harris would be a far better option than Imran Tahir.
It'll be interesting to see what the SA followers would like to see happen with that spinners slot. Once Tahir qualified for SA it seemed all there worries would be over in this department, finally they could select an attacking spinner, a spinner that can bowl a team out in the right conditions.

Unfortunately Tahir's selection may just have reminded SA how good a restricting job Harris did and the importance of his role within the side. I was never a big Harris fan, nor was Ashley Giles a particular favourite of mine, but they both did an effective job within the team without really catching the eye or stealing the headlines.

Tahir has not been as penetrative just yet for SA, and has at times proved quite expensive and unable to give Smith the control he would like. He can finish a tail off, and is a handful on a day five pitch, but he either needs to give his side more control in the first innings or pick up an important wicket or two.

So is the promise of Imran Tahir the attacking, if at times loose, wrist spinner still a better alternative to the more orthodox, economical if less penetrative Paul Harris ?

I think Harris would come into calculations a lot more if South Africa were only playing a four man attack. With Kallis (and to an extent Duminy) in the side they can afford to sacrifice some reliability and control from their spinner for something extra in terms of match-winning potential. If he's not bowling well or the situation of the game requires a more controlled approach then they can just reduce his overs with the other bowling options they have.

I'm not a big Tahir fan and I've maintained since Day 1 that he's been overhyped but I still definitely think he's the right pick as it stands.

Many in Pakistan cricket circles believe Mr Javed Akhtar was with the books in this game.

Agree with the point he's more likely to be selected in a five-man attack rather than a four-man attack. I like the idea of having a match winning (if expensive) spinner in the ranks, and if they have bowlers such as Kallis and Philander who can play the restrictive/economical role if required to do so, then they can afford it. Just wonder whether they have that bowler in Tahir or whether Harris would be more effective in this side in his own way.

Yep not what we expect from him but happening a bit more since his injury, don't get me wrong he's bowled alright this summer and he does do all the donkey work and adds balance to the side but still.

Ideally for the next Test I'd have Tremlett back in but I don't think he's Test fit yet and Onions is next in line

Obviously at Lords Swann's back and then it's going to be how to balance the side.
Last I heard, Tremmers was injured, possibly facing knee surgery and unlikely to play again this year

Just been reading, I went on holiday for a week and missed it. Gutted for the bloke,he would be in my side every time when fully fit, he just can't catch a break though and things were looking so positive for him when he came back from his back troubles.

I've been away for a week or so. Is Swann injured or was he overlooked?
Just overlooked.
Bit of both IMHO.

Personally think there might be more to his elbow woes than has found its way to the public domain.

Any injury that needs repeated cortisone injections to mask it is likely to be chronic.

Didn't bowl well in the first test at all tho, but, equally, that could be the injury affecting him.

What he fails to do is firstly explain the reason he was in police custody, and secondly express his gratitude for my kindness in posting bail for him
Look, Tangy - As I said to you on the car ride home, I was merely a victim of circumstance.
