Read through the rest of this thread. Safe to say I didn't miss much.

Anyway, hopefully there's cloud cover (but no rain) tomorrow so we actually see some mildly interesting cricket.

Philander is so overhyped it is unreal. Never expected him to run through us as he wasn't running through county sides earlier in the season. He has only beaten up the poor Aussie and NZ sides on perfect tracks to bowl on for christs sake.
Spot who didn't watch the series down here.

Agree with GF, reminded me a lot of Australia's bowling in 2010/11, but early in the series it can go two ways; lets hope for the sake of the series they get some extra form, rather than deteriorate as the Australians did.

It's been the first day of a test match ffs, what is wrong with you
Nothing, just he looked ordinary yesterday and he has NEVER had to come back and bowl deep into a 2nd day in a test before and with his fitness issues he doesn't look like the type to improve through a game.

People are quick to jump on the England attack if they have a bad day, why is it so wrong for me to hand out the same treatment to others? Oh yes I forgot, we are arrogant ***** as we are ranked number 1 and aren't allowed an opinion.

Worth remembering that Pollock spent most of the day saying Philanderer has fitness issues and isn't as good as the bare stats suggest, and that started before the toss too. If he has doubts then why can't anyone else?

Well of course he isn't going to be as good as his stats suggest, because they are otherworldly atm, anyone can see they won't stay where they are. It doesn't mean he won't still flatline at a very high level though. Casting doubts is fine, but practically writing him off as a bowler in general with stuff like "soon as he came against a good side he was toothless and wicketless in the day" is just silly.

Fair enough but they're not minnows. And they've got enough bowling to **** anyone up. If they find/develop/genetically engineer a batsman or two they'll be bloody good.
Don't really disagree there, on what we have seen though the batting looks weak and the selectors seem confused as to who to pick to replace the great old players.

Anyway, back to today and hopefully we pile up 500+ and see the pitch deteriorate a bit.

Well the press guys claiming he was basically a bog standard English seamer must be wrong and jumping the gun too then. I guess we will see today and over the rest of the series if I am right but on yesterday's evidence he has an awful lot of improving to do as he has been playing cricket recently and doesn't have the excuse that Steyn and Morkel have of coming in after a long break and being underdone.

What's Cook like at starting again after he's already got a score?

Better than Strauss I'd hope.

Too right, and people are also quick to point out how reactionary, biased and stupid it is when it happens.

Which is what's happening here.
Fair enough but when a guy is bowling at mid 70's after tea it means he either hasn't got fitness behind him or something is wrong. You wouldn't expect a guy of his speed to drop off so much pace wise when you only bowl 16 overs in a day would you?

After all the build up and hype he was a massive letdown and if he dropped off so quickly yesterday then what will happen today after his opening spell?
