As an experienced umpire of good standard Club cricket I saw exactly what Tony Hill decided on - and can assure you that he was in no way bullied, quite the reverse actually. He handled it very calmly and in his own time - which is good umpiring.

Moreover, looking at the film HE GOT IT RIGHT

And Botham giving a VERY good assessment of it now.....
Fair enough, I completely disagree though. There is no way in hell you could tell if it was pad first or not, so benefit should have gone to Gayle. Poor from Hill, no issue with dharmasena upholding it.

Unfortunatrly a match changing error too.

I suspect that he 'got' a sound of ball on pad a fraction before that on the bat. I think he picked up both (trust me, you don't always) and just took his time confirming this. Had the pad sound swamped the bat he'd have given it quicker.

Botham also made the point that the line of the delivery meant it would flick the pad first - sometimes an umpire will be able to use that too.

And take back the WW insult - or I will send the boys round:laugh::laugh:

Ok so in my anger at the decision I might have been a tad harsh on you . Apologies.

Still, even if what you say is true, it's still a wild guess from Hill that should never have been given. Just because it suits Englsnd down to the ground doesn't mean it's right you know! Lol.

I've looked at the film. It's 50/50. So it's 50/50 whether he got it right or wrong, but usually if you're not sure after 10 or w/ever seconds benefit of the doubt comes out, cause you know clearly you have doubt. Terrible call? No. Got it right? No not really. It's 50/50.

Bresnan's gone for 4 sixes but only conceded 29 runs

I cannot fathom how someone can be conceding a 6 every 8 balls yet still be going at under 6 an over.

I would, from experience, disagree with that.

And over the years I have criticised decisions that have favoured England - but I can normally understand the umpire's thought process even when they make an error.

There is one major umpire at the moment that baffles me too often - and I know (from the umpire's grapevine) that he is not highly thought of by many players and one international team are very annoyed when they get him (and because of their complaints they do tend to see less of him).

Wrong.

A good call.

You see the mark on the bat but that was already there before the bat came into view - the bat being behind the front of the pad when the ball hits it having, a fraction before, toiuched the pad.

Oh, and Mr Gayle might need to take his wallet somewhere soon....

I agree.

And VERY good patience from Tony Hill. In such a situation it can be tough for an umpire to calmly go through the procedures.
No, it was a **** call. At worst the impact was simultaneous. Should never have been given.

He hasn't been scored off a great deal, other than the sixes.

There you go.

In other news, apparently there has been an earthquake in Melbourne, 5.5 reading.

Initial reports indicate its the most smug, self-styled chic and self-important earthquake in recorded history.

And yet the film said otherwise.......:-O
No it didn't. You're looking at it as a biased English supporter, albeit one who has umpired at a decent club level.

The very worst which could be said for Gayle was the impact was simultaneous. It was a dud call.
