A Batsman's 'Prime'

You're so high maintenance :)

Remember this is just the top 30 peak batsmen - a larger sample may reveal different results; maybe PEWS can write some code to parse the website and get additional info, at least on age at peak. ["first -50" is the first time the batsman came within 50 points of his peak, "last -50" would be the last time this occurred].

Code:

Rob, what are you taking as the peak there, is it the 30 innings you did earlier?

Also, can you point to an explanation of how you derive standardized averages?

Cheers.

That post weldone quoted was a reply to his question asking for 30 dismissal peaks. For example - 20, 15*, 14, 12*, 89 would be five innings but only three dismissals.

Re: your second question, I'll try and find a post in the standardised averages thread that answers that properly for you.

I've thought about incorporating that particular chart into my rankings, however it definitely seems to favour those who play more Tests per year.
I wouldn't suggest doing that. Peak rating is peak rating, and career rating is career rating. They should be kept separate. Awarding points for good peak ratings is equivalent to penalising people for being consistent.

But then, it's your ranking obv...

Well on a more basic level - over a career, I'm not sure I would WANT my player to have peaks and period of bad form. Obviously some of that is inevitable but I'd take a consistent player with an average of 50 over someone who may average higher for a time but then also has long periods where he dips a lot.

Personal preference of course.

Yeah, it's something I'd be more inclined to do if I wanted to prove I could make a statistical model that closely aligned with general public opinion. It's not something I personally value very much.
