Yeah, it's also amazing the amount of Arsenal players that leave and never reach the same heights again. It kinda speaks volumes about the chemistry of the Arsenal team IMO, the fact that so many midfield players have fitted in perfectly at the club and had success, but then faded away when going to arguably stronger clubs.
I wonder this, but then also wonder if in some cases at Arsenal they were made to look better than they were. How many of the players who left Arsenal who were part of the sides that won anything (and who weren't past their best anyway) have really faltered? Not many tbh, Petit maybe, Edu (but he was never that great anyway)...not as long a list as some would have you believe imo.

I guess there's the whole big fish in a small pond cliche as well, which might make some average players look really good. I haven't really followed enough title winning Arsenal sides (just the invincibles) to be able to answer your question, but in recent years the likes of Helb and Nasri's careers have definetly gone downhill after leaving Arsenal. I don't really know how Flamini went after he left Arsenal, and I suppose Adebayor has done alright for himself since he left so I guess you could be right.

Arbeloa most definitely wasn't up there with the best in the league whilst with us.

Certainly nowhere near the best. The Madrid fans I know described him as a '7/10 player'. Really handy guy to have around the squad though, he could play full-back on either side and I remember him doing a great job on Messi in the Champions League.

I'd say the 7/10 player tag is fair enough, but even so would still have said he was one of the top right backs in the league at the time. May say more about the quality of the league than about his overall ability I suppose. Apart from Sagna I don't really think there were that many decent players in that position at the time. I can't be bothered to think about it too closely, but from the other big sides you had Gary Neville (old and past it by then, and constantly injured), Bosingwa (rubbish), Paul Ferreira (rubbish), Ivanovic (better centre back)... and he was certainly better than all of them.

A couple more classics from the FA today - first, Derry didn't have his red-card at Old Trafford overturned despite Young's dive. And then - almost inevitably and yet ****ing ridiculously - Balotelli gets away with his studs-up assault on Song because apparently one of the match officials saw it happen.

Ivanovic charged though. So the FA are 1/3 - which, sadly, is probably better than average for them.

One has to wonder if one of the officials saw the Balotelli incident, why on earth he wasn't sent off. The only possible explanation I could think of previously is that it was somehow missed by all of them...but apparently not...

"Where at least one of the officials has seen the coming together of players retrospective action is not taken, regardless of whether they have seen the full extent of the challenge."

This bit is being stressed - it seems as though one of the match officials must have caught a glimpse of the "challenge" but didn't see just how bad it was. Utter joke.

Saw it on the news earlier and Song was lucky to escape serious injury

Horrible challenge and didnt look like a simple error in judgement from Balotelli either

It's an evil challenge, over the ball, studs raised. It's the same sort of tackle that Ramsey and Eduardo had their legs broken by. Thank the lord Song wasn't seriously hurt, but that's clearly just more luck than better judgement.

If one of the officials saw it (Arsenal didn't even get a free-kick) he should never officiate again, because his judgement is seriously ****ed.

Farcical stuff.

How long does everyone think Balotelli should be banned for, solely based on that Song tackle? Personally, I'd want him gone for the whole season and possibly more.

Kenny doing us a favour by selecting an awful looking eleven. Just need their guys to play like they have been playing all season and Rovers should be out of the relegation zone. Worried about Bellamy and Maxi though. Shame he dropped Carragher to the bench.

Well, in any event, Mancini has said he's not going to select him for any of City's remaining games this season, so I guess it's kind of immaterial.

Haha yeah, fair enough, but I'd be surprised he'd go back on his word so soon after he said it. In any case, with the Tevez affair you get the feeling that he was rather forced to not to stick to his convictions after the powers above exerted their will over him. Reckon if he had it his way he would have been shot of him for good.
