Hmm I have slept on it, and have realised the 'how long is a days play' question was rather stupid and obvious, so I apologise. I am however still intrigued by this 'length of pitch' question.

Lyon is a difficult one to predict. He definately has a litte more to him imo than just your standard offspinner...there is something special about him, but it's hard to know just how much that is the case. Not too many bowlers get flight on the ball as consistently as he does, but you feel perhaps in the longer term he will need to work on his variations a bit to move up to another level. For now though, I think how he is approaching his bowling is pretty much exactly what he needs to do; just continue to hone his classical style of offspin, master the basics, and then take it from there if need be.

i think the most important question is whether we're playing on an astro pitch or not

The Australian batsmen have played spin much better than the WI batsmen especially lately.
When was the last time Australia were truly tested in spin conditions though? our lot were just in India and scored 301, 461 and 590 aginst the likes of Ashwin and Ohja!!, we also faced Ajmal and Rehman at home on some minefields and managed to draw the series, so i wouldn't say we are that bad against spin these days, yes we've had a few collapses but in general i think we've done well, even in late 2010 in Sri-lanka against Mendis and Hereth we managed to draw the series aswell.

Galle was played on undoubtedly the most spin-friendly pitch in at least eight years. Hussey ground out close to a century whilst Clarke decided to score at a pace which seemed a bit... untrue.

ashwin a better bat than spinner, and didn't see a great deal, but weren't those decks mostly flat for 4 days?

Ajmal took 17 WI wickets @ 14.

Rehman took 9 @ 21

Bishoo took 9 @ 39 in the same series.

Ashwin 22 wickets @ 22
Ohja 20 @ 22

Bishoo 7 wickets @ 62 in the same series.

Then there is the Bangledesh spinners.

B!sh00 is a right arm leg spinner and Lyon is a right arm off spinner
Aware of this ****. Still you're able to compare them slightly. It's like saying you can't compare two fast bowlers because one bowls outswing and the other bowls in swing.

Pipe down ****.

I just think exact comparisons, to the point of a county by country basis is a bit silly because they are different bowlers. Right arm off spinners of course are known to struggle in Aus, whereas leggies aren't. obviously b1sh00 hasn't played here, but let's not go over-board

That said one thing to throw out

but really, they're different spinners, they've played against different teams, in different places. the only thing they share in common is they're both new. I don't see any point starting up a nationalist stat war at least until after the first test
