Pecking order for Australian quicks?

I like Hazlewood but he's clearly below Starc in the selector's thinking right now. It can quickly change, though, because it's all so early in their careers.

I think his ranking atm is more due to later recovery from injury than quality. Such a shame to see him injured again.

I do know it's tough to pick em young, but I do think Haze is going to take a lot of test wickets.

Then there's a big step down, so they only need to hope that only two out of Pattinson, Cummins and Harris are injured at any one time.

Way off the mark, there's massive depth in Australian fast bowling atm.


Starc's a great prospect, very raw, but he consistantly swings the ball in every game I've watched him, including the white ball. Add to that he's a left armer.


Starc was picked only because Cutting is injured, he's definately capable at test level imo.

Hazlewood will play alot of test cricket.


Coulter-Nile is another that hasn't been mentioned, but will be brought in via the Australian one-day side and T20 sides, bowling all-rounder that is very sharp @ 145+ km/h


Mitchell Marsh can bowl, but is primed to replace Ponting in 12 months imo.


Then the likes of Bollinger, Johnson etc are still around the traps..........



Shane Watson also averages 28 with the ball................

I suspect Nathan Coulter-Nile is somewhere on the radar too. He's got some great fundamentals, 140kph+ outswing, good bat and field, and I know Mickey Arthur is an unabashed fan (notwithstanding WA bias).

I haven't seen enough of him to know how disciplined his bowling is in the longer forms, but based on what I have seen he looks like someone who with some refinement, and a little bit of luck on the injury front, could be Test-standard.

I suspect he's already ahead of Copeland and possibly Johnson, Hazlewood and Cutting in the pecking order.

That's just soooo wrong. He's been bowling very nicely and showing the control that has excited since day 1. His pace has been fine and he's been NSW's most consistent Shield bowler going at under 3 rpo. Starc has a better s/r but has been giving the runs up at 4 rpo to do it. Pattinson and Starc have both really stepped up since Billy has had the chance to work with them. I'd love to see what Haze would be like with the same opportunity. I suspect he'd kill it.

If you really think that he's no where near Starc then I'd hate to have seen you 20 years ago telling everyone to forget that McGrath fellow as he's got nothing on Brendon Julian.

Unfortunately, Hazelwood has suffered a number of injuries and has been well down on pace all year

Putting him at the same level as the others AT THE MOMENT is just silly

Everyone learns pretty quick to ignore social's posts on how much he loves left arm quicks and how little he rates off spinners. I reckon, deep down, he wants to see an Australian attack of Starc, Johnson, Bollinger, Boyce and Smith take the field; he's that biased about the topic at times. To be fair he's right - all those runs they dock off the opposition's score for each over someone bowls with their left arm or over the wrist at the end of the innings could make it worth it. Mark Higgs still plays for the Comets too; double demerits.

Nathan Lyon series bowling average currently stands at 63.75 and must be the most predictable stat of the summer

For someone that knows a lot about the game and has great knowledge of stats, your failure to admit that off-spinners have historically been by faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar the easiest type of bowler to face in Australian conditions borders on the farcical.

For his part, Lyon looks a nice bowler with a good action but anyone expecting him to average less than 35 at home is kidding themselves

He may be the best option for the time being but long term, Oz will need to unearth a leg-spinner or left-arm orthodox if they want to have a spinner that does much more than holds up an end IN AUSTRALIAN CONDITIONS

Apart from Warne & Macgill, most successful test spinner in Oz conditions of recent times has been Vettori

Batted against Whit a lot but only a coupleof times in a match and he didnt get me out

Phill Alley - played against him once (he was injured a helluva lot) and got a few

Andrew Jones & Andrew Hunter were the best left-armers I faced in Sydney grade but both failed to kick on for different reasons

Tbh, as a leftie, I didnt mind left-armers as they came into me in general

Still, all of our best spin options at the moment are either offspinners or LAO. I think Lyon is our best bet, outside possibly Hauritz. Long term I think Lyon will be better though.
