Sehwag likely to be the next test captain

MS Dhoni might lose Test captaincy, Sehwag likely to replace him - The Times of India

India's whitewash in Australia - the second in a row overseas for the cricket team - has triggered a big debate in the cricket establishment, throwing up several ideas, some radical, many cosmetic.

An idea finding favour with the BCCI bosses is that MS Dhoni should be stripped of Test captaincy. The current front runner for the captain's position is Virender Sehwag.

This doesn't mean Dhoni would be stripped of all captaincy - he's expected to remain captain for the limited-overs versions of the game, ODI and T20.
For Test matches, though, his captaincy has been found wanting. Meanwhile, Sehwag has made plain that he hasn't got his due (and has begun to view Dhoni as the reason for that) and the cricket bosses think that perhaps he should be given a chance. It's another matter that Sehwag's record as captain, either of India or of Delhi Daredevils, hasn't been great.
While all the senior players, including VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid, have clarified that they won't be retiring from cricket as yet, it doesn't mean that both or either will be selected to play Tests.

Did 'ego clash' with Sehwag affect MSD?

However, what is really disturbing is the talk of "an ego clash" between Dhoni and Sehwag. It's said that this affected Dhoni's captaincy and he couldn't quite assert his authority with Sehwag and a few others.

Dhoni also feels that Sehwag could have done better in Australia if had shown greater discipline while batting. The authorities are examining to what extent this dissension within the team contributed to its debacle in Australia.

Senior players like Sachin Tendulkar, Dravid or Laxman don't have had a problem playing under Dhoni (or under Sehwag, for that matter), but Sehwag has apparently made his opinions clear: he doesn't like Dhoni's way of handling things, be it in selecting the playing XI, field placements during Test matches or the issue of bringing in younger players. He feels that his views have not been heard.

Dhoni's emotional outburst that he was contemplating quitting Tests after 2013 has also not gone down well with BCCI bosses. "There is no point talking about 2013 in the middle of a Test series," an official said.

Incidentally, two senior pros who are under pressure to quit, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, may have decide not to call it a day yet but BCCI officials say that it's apparent that both are past their prime, and it would be wise to blood some youngsters in their place.

The names of Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Cheteshwar Pujara were mentioned in this context. It was also said that once Yuvraj Singh gets fit to play, he will be an "automatic choice".
Change of guard: Dhoni to lose Test captaincy?

Sewag's position in team is not justified after his recent performances and the power-to-be wanhim as next test captain:laugh:

Would you guys prefer him in place of MS?

Given how off-target they've been with the retirement talk of late, will take this with a real grain of salt but I guess he's an improvement on Dhoni.

Which says very little.

Sehwag captained horribly in Adelaide I thought. This is a Dilshan waiting to happen.

Better off with Gambhir or delaying it and giving it to Kohli when he establishes himself and matures.

i mean here are the arguments against most of the players"

G.G: Barely deserving of a place in the side. On the plus side he could be one of those players who is, you know, a good captain. Both on the field and off it. But then would he be any better than MS?
Sehwag: Has actually captained, was horrible. could be about to go.
Dravid: about to go
Laxman: about to go
Sachin: about to go, has actually captained, was horrible
Kohli: maybe later
MS: terrible overseas player. pretty bad on field captain but I dunno know up until these two 4-0's he seemed to unite the playing group and all that bull****. With no overseas torus for the next two years I would probably just keep him on and hope by the time the next overseas tour comes there's a player actually deserving of the captaincy and a place in the team
The bowlers: Are bowlers

If you take away the C from MS are you dropping him? I doubt it. So just keep him on. He ain't my favourite guy but really the options are pretty bare. Giving G.G the VC is a no brainer tho

The move to bring Ashwin on early was a good move, other than that wasn't too much to write home about. He would be an improvement over Dhoni and doesn't look like one that will be getting dropped. Outside of him can't see any leaders.

The coach has to take some rsponsibility for the captain's tactical failings.

Yeah a large part of captaincy is having a 'hunch' with who should be bowling and which field position is most likely to attract a ball, but keeping a deep point when a new batsmen comes in is not a hunch.

Australia executed their plans so well, whereas India looked like they didn't have plans. I mean ****, who can actually say they could see what India were definitely trying to do to a particular Australian batsmen? Just looked like it was bowl and hope. I'm not sure if that's because the bowlers weren't skilled enough to bowl to a plan, or the coaching staff haven't done their job.

Dhoni has always been captaining this way in tests. Bluff field settings that no **** understands. Was able to fluke it so far with a lot of players in form. He is being exposed for the idiot that he is as a test captain now that almost everyone is out of form.

I know he has done that in the past, but what's stopping a coach from telling him to stop being a ****?

Sending someone to deep point is a conscious captaincy decision. The game is so controlled now that they should have plans A, B and C for every batsmen. That includes where to bowl, who to bowl and what fielding positions to have for each player.

Test cricket is not just going out there and training and then hoping to win on the day. It takes a dick load of preparation.
