Sehwag likely to be the next test captain

I know he has done that in the past, but what's stopping a coach from telling him to stop being a ****?

Sending someone to deep point is a conscious captaincy decision. The game is so controlled now that they should have plans A, B and C for every batsmen. That includes where to bowl, who to bowl and what fielding positions to have for each player.

Test cricket is not just going out there and training and then hoping to win on the day. It takes a dick load of preparation.
Yeah, the current England - Pakistan series has shown a lot of that preparation being put into practice by the captains. Misbah knew exactly what to do against each of the English batsmen.

You would think Fletcher is well across all that stuff. So must go deeper. 05 Ashes told us someone was thinking - is Fletcher being ignored?

My choice is Gambhir. He's sufficiently experienced, one of the team's better players and isn't averse to leading the side, unlike Sehwag. Zaheer would be a brilliant choice but for his injuries, and Ashwin at present needs to get runs and wickets to be useful, so he stays out too. Really a no-contest in favour of Gambhir, unless Sehwag is really keen.

Or will they do a Graeme Smith or Michael Vaughan? Pick someone fresh and new to lead the side? Or pick someone not quite good enough to lead the team?

Sehwag captained horribly in Adelaide I thought. This is a Dilshan waiting to happen.

Better off with Gambhir or delaying it and giving it to Kohli when he establishes himself and matures.
Agree with this, he may improve though. I remember one WC where Cronje was wired up so the coach could tell him want to do, perhaps Taylor or Chappelli from the commentary box could help. Or bring back Ganguly

Makes it very hard for the coaches to have an input with Dhoni/Tendulkar in there.

Apparently the bowling coach has gone through with Sharma et al. their plans, bowling full, on the stumps etc. As soon as they get out there Tendulkar will say I think you should bowl short at this guy or something, and so they bowl short and get hammered.

Dhoni has no plans at all. Says that he does his planning once he walks across the ropes and not before.

Sehwag would probably make a terrible captain I think (especially if Adelaide was anything to go by)

People are being too harsh on Dhoni(captaincy part atleast) and i am saying that as someone who has never been that fond of his test captaincy. The Indian bowlers were so wayward and inconsistent that you could make any plans, it wouldn't matter as they would bowl many balls somewhere else. Meanwhile, the batsman were so pathetic that they couldn't build any pressure (as they used too) for the bowlers to work with, as a result of which the pressure was transferred onto the bowlers who wilted.

As for Sehwag as Captain, don't like him tactically on the field or him as personality for captaincy off it.

Off the field he is too blunt and is prone to make really arrogant and straight statements causing unnecessary controversy like when he has called opposition teams "ordinary" and "poor" in the past before the match. On the field too, he is too bull headed and someone who doesn't seem to plan much but rely on instincts to take decisions which can be weird.

Plus obviously he needs to improve his form first too which has been awful since his hurried comeback from Injury. The only positive i can think of him as a captain is that he is pretty much immune to any criticism and doesn't seem to give two hoots about what anyone thinks of him.

Would rather stick with Dhoni as captain for the time being, but if his performances drop more or if a change has to happen then, Gautam Gambhir would be choice for me.

I don't much rate Dhoni as a captain, but I can't see Sehwag or Gambhir being improvements either. Sehwag doesn't strike one as a particularly deep thinker and Gambhir probably has enough on his plate keeping his place (plus he's a massive tool, obvz, but that doesn't mean he'd be a bad captain, see Ranatunga), so is change for change's sake the way to go?

Kohli for me; newbie, largely untainted by failure, best fielder in the side and clearly has a bit of gumption about him.

I agree with this. Although he's a bit raw (giving the finger, celebrating his hundred so that he misses the opportunity for another run), in the words of Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann, "he's got guts, and guts is enough." The senior players don't seem to have the vigour to lead and the other young ones are clearly looking for someone to give them instructions. I also get the feeling that a Kohli-led India wouldn't break mentally like they did on the England/Australia tours.

Kohli would find it really hard captaining a side with the three hallowed dinos still in it. Let him mature a little first, and even then I don't think he'll possess the gravitas to captain an international sporting side. Bluster alone doesn't cut it.

Sehwag is a village bumpkin, and I intend that to be an insult.

I never thought Ganguly was a particularly imaginative captain vis a vis field settings either. Dhoni, I felt, had something about him - for instance, that time he completely choked off scoring outside the off in India against Aus; it revealed a hard as nails side to him. During whatever fleeting successes we had, he always seemed to make the right bowling changes at the right times. I was, and still am a fan of his assured presence, but he seems to have fallen away recently. Maybe there is some substance to rumors of dissent within the ranks.

Look, I know this is flogging a dead horse, but until the old guys bugger off, new positions won't open up, and we are not going to be in any position to judge the captaincy credentials of our new crop. IMO, the only way forward is to give the job to a fresh faced kid, but at the moment it's a little difficult to pin down just who that might be. Best bet would be persist with Dhoni till the oldies go away. We're not playing away cricket for two years anyway, so I imagine he'll score a few runs on the SC as well. In about two years, we should have a clearer picture emerging.

Strong words, from a strange man.

He DESERVES it!!!!!!

That **** DESERVES it for his **** UP defensive captaincy!!!!!!!

My blood was BOILING when Dhoni went for defensive route after having Australia at 27/4.

If he doesn't get dropped, then James Anderson should bowl him a 128 kph inswinging yorker and make it look like a 160 kph Waqar Younis fiery by sending Dhoni's middle stump cart-wheeling in all 8 innings at a score of zero!!!!!
