Clarke quits as T20 captain

Captaincy is important but it's not the be all and end all. Clarke is considered a good captain yet he couldn't beat Collingwood and his men. Harbhajan Singh was captain of Mumbai Indians and he beat RCB who had Vettori at the helm for the CL. And now Steve Smith has captained the Sixers to the final.

That's why I said a touch unlucky.

I am struggling to think of many other players who could realistically deserve to be in that squad. There aren't too many outside of that who provided consistent performances, as most of the players had one or two good games and not much impact otherwise.

I get the impression that Doherty is in there rightly or wrongly because he is/will be our limited overs spinner.

the most interesting thing about the bailey thing is, they're pointing to the aus a game as y'know, a sign or whatever that this guy was the man to lead.......but he was lucky enough to make the aus a team, given he's nowhere near test selection and he was in poor form until a 2nd innings-already-got-200-run-lead ton boasted the numbers (although cowan was the same tbf)

To be fair, Bailey has deserved a shot in international Twenty20 for a number of years now. Poor form this season, however he bats in a role that is very tough to achieve consistent success. Middle order batsmen who have decent records in this format are rare. Prefer him over White, and you couldn't find many better options for his position.

Bit of a depth chart:

Overlooking openers of which they are plenty and keepers of which they are none (except for that paine guy)

Spinners:
I'd take Lyon (ssrly we gave him the test spot because of t20 and now he isn't good enough), Beer, SOK, Smith, Hauritz, Krejza and that guy other there over Doherty. There's a lot of options here and it's a bit disappointing that we've played it safe.

Fast bowers:
Starc, obviously is unlucky. I wouldn't have picked Lee good recent form withstanding because for the most part he's been sucky in t20 for the last couple of years, I don't see him as a T20 WC option.Rimmington wasn't quite up to his usual form but he's been killing it in T20 for so long I wouldn't've minded him getting a go for these two games. Bollinger, MJ and Cummins injured but obviously will figure in the WC

batsmen at 5-6:
yeah the cupboard's totally bare. gonna be a problem both here and the t20 wc unless bailey happens to fire (or the openers do)

I can take or leave Doherty. I think most of those bowlers would perform similarly - i.e. inconsistently.

I think McDermott is a bit unlucky as well but understandable if they are picking a team for the T20 world cup in September (I had no idea there even was one!!?). He probably needs another 12 months of development and decent limited overs performances before he starts breaking through. Being able to hold a bat wouldn't hurt either.


As for batsmen at 5-6, I think the top order guys could do a good enough job. I don't care who is in there, but if they try more than one ramp shot in an over they should be dropped immediately.

but I'm delighted they didn't select the specialist fielder Steve Smith.

Averages 20 with the bat, 19 with the ball and has captained the Sixers into the BBL Final, but yeah, specialist fielder.
