Lol, probably all because of Dougie's success. Wouldn't surprise me if our selectors were that fickle.

TV1 news described today as "embarassing" for the NZ XI. Think a lot of people over here are seriously underestimating Zim. Afterall they walloped Bangladesh, fared a lot better against Pakistan than the current world number 1's and came heart breakingly close to beating us a few months ago. Reckon there could be a couple more embarassing days before the tour is over.
+1 need to be careful this tour

A friend of mine has a wad of cash on the Zimbos paying $12. I think that's a very, very good bet.

NZ needs to learn that preparing lottery greentops is great when we're outmatched, not so good when we ought to be a class above the opposition (on the rare occasion that happens).

$12 is crazy. Zimbabwe are a much better side than that.

Taylor and Williamson's failure in the warm up game shows that our top order's lack of batting form is still a big issue.

I didn't see the report but I'm going to go ahead and guess Stanaway did it? Sounds like something that tool would say. They've scored 328 against an NZ A side, with a handful of guys who haven't played Test cricket, on what I'm presuming is a pretty good deck. And it's a warm-up match, not even of FC status. And some idiot journo calls it embarrassing.

Incidentally, John Wright apparently has a real coach boner for Michael Bracewell. Basically if you have the grit, without necessarily the numbers to back it up, you're a sniff.

Hmmm, well it is a NZ XI game, not NZ A. Wells seemed to be a bit of a left field selection too.
They probably just wanted to give a couple of Otago guys a chance.

NZ XI yeah, my bad.

Wells/Bracewell probably wouldn't have played if Auckland/Canterbury players were available. The likes of Nicol, de Grandhomme etc might have got a run, although Wright is a big fan of both of the names first mentioned.

It seems Tim McIntosh is a spent force if he can't get a nod for an NZ XI side now.

So this means James Franklin definitely has no hope of a 13th comeback?

Looks like a bit of a Grant Elliott selection to me.

I'm guessing Wright sees Wells as a backup for Vettori as no-one else in the squad can lay claim to being any sort of allrounder. It's surprising though since only averages 38 with two centuries, when batting down the order has been fairly proftable for a lot of domestic batsmen in last few years (keepers, Woodcock etc). Can't help but think it is a prod for Jesse too - left handed lower middle order batsman whose right arm mediums add important balance to the side. Didn't realise Wells is 27 - so i suppose no point waiting longer to see if he has what it takes.

Though honestly I doubt he will get a game this season barring a stack of injuries.

Great minds, I thought exactly the same when I heard about it.

Wells is definitely a John Wright cricketer. Not overly gifted, but talented enough, gritty, puts a price on his wicket, and I guess another benefit is he isn't playing limited overs for Otago so isn't weighed down by having to transfer from format to format.

Word is the above is what counted against Reece Young. Hell of a good player and in my mind was unfairly axed but Wright isn't a fan of the somewhat flashy approach, the tats, the reverse sweeps etc. The van Wyks, the de Boorders appeal more

Interesting. Still I'm pretty happy with Wright so far and want to see him have enough control to make these sorts of decisions, with his own ideas of what might work, for a couple more years at least. Hope he doesn't leave after contract expires in August.

Based on this, I'd chuck a few dollars on Flynn cruising into the top order if there's a spot up for grabs when he returns.

Hardly. Wells scores runs.

Might not be the most opportune moment for him to get a run. In the seasons before this one he beasted it and rescued Otago a lot. IIRC he's been a bit quiet this season.
