Is Marchant de Lange the new Vernon Philander?

7 wickets on debut. WOW! Could really see him murdering the black caps. And with this perfomance, we can safely say Tsotsobe's test career is over.

Way too many good fast bowlers appearing on the scene. Awesome days are returning to test cricket.

What would now be SA's first choice attack? Steyn, Philander, de Lange and Tahir with Morkel missing out?

Would make more sense to go with Steyn, Philander, Morkel and De Lounge in general (over-rates might be an issue, but putting that aside for a moment).

Tahir can be played sometimes in spin-friendly conditions, depending on how the opponents play spin (like I would prefer the pace quarlet in India against India, but Tahir may play in West Indies against West Indies)...

if they go for four prong pace attack, then it would be in the best interest to balance the side by playing Dean elgar or Duminy.

Just watched the highlights...dudes got a pretty strange action. Looks like a beast too.

Odd that in such a great year for debutants, the most successful team didn't debut anyone.
Helps us be the best team that we have a settled unit where everyone knows their roles. only places we may give a debut in near future are number 6 for Taylor or if Prior got injured and Davies played.

One thing we can say, the best newcomer award at the ICC awards is going to be tough to win next year.

Hard to think of a year before this one when we didn't debut anyone, as well

I'm sure it was probably more recent than I'm thinking, but out of a bit of boredom I'm going to think of one debutant per year as far back as I can

2010: Morgan
2009: Onions
2008: Pattinson
2007: Prior
2006: Mahmood
2005: Pietersen
2004: Strauss
2003: Collingwood
2002: Simon Jones
2001: Sidebottom
2000: Hoggard

cbf to go back further using my memory, and I cbf to look it up either, I'm sure cricinfo would be able to find the info for me fairly quickly. I know there will have been some in 99 under Hussain/Fletcher, and Flintoff was 98 so you're going back a long time...given our policies in the 90s it could be quite a bit further back...

Done the legwork - turns out the last year with no England debutant was 1953.
