The biggest issue here for both sides are the openers. On a pitch like this going some way to seeing off the new ball and stopping the middle order from being exposed to it is imperative

Both sides have failed miserably in this respect, and I think its largely because that concept of opening the batting has been lost in the modern game
That's why the English openers are the best in the world.

Yeah, I cbf compiling the scores for the top 3 from both sides this series but it hasn't been pretty. I think McCullum or Khawaja's 30-somethings have been the top scores. To be fair it hasn't been easy either.

Nasser Baz did pretty much see off the new ball.
Yeah, fair enough he did ok in that respect

But your number 3 was batting after the second over, number 4 in the fifth, etc etc

Openers aren't as gritty as they used to be, don't have the technique for this sort of thing. Thats why when you finally get a spicy pitch things go a little crazy

Agree with that, but not just their openers. English batsmen in general would cope better than any other current lineup in these conditions (SA with Smith & co would be second). The play within tight lines & rarely push out at the ball. I'd back England's batting lineup to get to at least 200 if not 250 against either of these two attacks on this wicket.

Like what I saw of boult. While his action is different, his pace and swing remind me a lot of a young jimmy franklin. Maybe doesn't swing it quite as much, but he's also shown fantastic control. Promising.

AWTA.

Trott has been the best at this in recent times and the key to why we've improved so much in swinging/seaming conditions.

Boult has really impressed today. Obviously they are conditions that suit his type of bowling but he's done well with them. Though Bracewell was moderately impressive in Brisbane and has been decent here, Boult looks a better bowler right now.
Which is hardly surprising given Boult's far superior domestic record.

Quality stuff though, movement both ways at a decent pace (he'll bowl quicker then this) and excellent control. Pretty much your stock standard Trent Boult performance.

Haha, there's something that a Jimmy Franklin didn't tend to show a lot of!

I find it interesting how Boult clearly modelled his action on Wasim, but his build is quite different - probably more Vaas-like.

I get the feeling that with the Clarke wicket NZ suddenly realised they were on top in the match. We're now in 'wtf do we do now we're ahead???????' territory.
