All told, the new panel lack basic cricket smarts.
You can just tell already.
It does look like they're supporting some of the dud decisions of the Hilditch reign of error.
Beer is the most striking of them, and Starc is still to me about No.5 in NSW if he's lucky.
I suppose you can forgive the middle order simply because they don't have much to choose from. If Lynn had even managed a couple of 30's this game he might have got the nod. The best you can say about Cowan and Bailey is that they're consistently ordinary. Bailey's season averages since 04/05 are: 23, 43, 36, 43, 37, 43, 30, Cowan's are similar 22, 30, 18, 22, 50, 34. If these guys ever play test cricket we will officially be NZ. Cooper has been picked on one match and a prayer. The sad thing is that no batsman can really truly say they've been stiffed not getting selected. Peter Nevill and Glenn Maxwell smoke these nuffies from 7.
Pattinson has given the Hilditch cabal hard ons and no doubt he has potential, but he's not really smashing the door down. Not a terrible selection, but seems more a continuation of Hilditch thinking. Hilf is also a relic from a past age. He has started the season well, but the thought of him, Siddle and Johnson as our test attack is just too raw. Butterworth is as good if not better and deserves a go.
Not that inspiring a start to the new era.
