Butt/Amir/Asif - Spot Fixing Trial

Matthew Le Tissier admits being part of attempted betting scam at Southampton - Telegraph

So it seems cricket isn't the only corrupt sport. This idiot should be given a ban and fined.
Story's well over two years old, fella. He mentioned it himself in his autobiography.

Plus he's long since retired and all.

Interesting view from Lord Condon (ex head of ICC's anti-corruption unit): "Countries who fail to control their players should be banned."

It's completely arse-about-face to my way of thinking tho, as the threat of a ban for the country in question is a big **** off disincentive to boards uncovering any wrong-doing.

AN if you're interested in the history of this sort of chicanery have a read of this
Not really interested in football or this story. I got the link and story from PakPassion, and just thought that cricket isn't the only sport that is dodgy. Didn't know that this guy had retired. Reminds me of Gibbs the idiot who also messed up

Edit: your write up is about cricket, so will have a look later. Thanks.

I had feared that convictions / prison sentences might meet with some opposition or reaction from some Pakistan supporters, but from the odd bits and pieces I've read, I get the impression that the majority view among Pakistan fans is that the trial and its outcome were fair. Is my impression correct?

I don't know about other Pak fans but I think a permanent ban from cricket and a fine should have sufficed. I think a jail sentence is harsh and unfair.

Ian Chappell's views: Ian Chappell: It's time cricket got tough with the crooks | Opinion | Cricinfo Magazine | ESPN Cricinfo

And if anyone thinks Bob Woolmer's death wasn't slightly suspicious and that Pakistan players are the only ones involved in this racket, I have a rewarding Nigerian investment opportunity you'd be interested in.

It's like when your dad tries to be cool and contemporary, except that Chappell actually managed to pull it off so nonchalantly. WAG
Ian Chappell is a tool.

It would give us a break to get our house under order.
we just need a period of calm which tbf we have been having since Misbah took over taking abreak will not help Pakistan atleast with playing ICC can keep an eye on things if PCB is left on its own to sort things out trust me no good will come out of it.

also Pakistani nation is a typical "latoon key bhoot" people after these jail sentences don't expect any bending for a while now the key is to eradicate it at all levels.

TBF I wouldn't mind if Pakistan was banned for a year. It will keep us out from any controversy.
I've always disliked the idea of punishing groups for the deeds of individuals. Doesn't make sense to me.

Apart from that, even a banned Pakistan could get into controversy ;) .

As far as ICC handling goes: a ban and possibly a fine. But the British criminal court is not about cricket or cricket results. Butt, Asif and Amir have been found guilty of conspiracy to accept corrupt payments and conspiracy to cheat. The criminal trial was merely about making money by rigging bets. People who rig bets should be considered as major criminals. I can't say I find the jail sentences harsh.

The only thing I can think of as a proper defense, is for Amir. He might very well have been under a LOT of pressure by Butt to conspire with him.

Community service would have been better, maybe supervised cricket coaching for English school kids for a few months. Jail is for people who are harmful to society not people who planned on defrauding bookies but were caught before that plan was put into motion.
