Story's well over two years old, fella. He mentioned it himself in his autobiography.

Plus he's long since retired and all.

It's completely arse-about-face to my way of thinking tho, as the threat of a ban for the country in question is a big **** off disincentive to boards uncovering any wrong-doing.

Not really interested in football or this story. I got the link and story from PakPassion, and just thought that cricket isn't the only sport that is dodgy. Didn't know that this guy had retired. Reminds me of Gibbs the idiot who also messed up

I had feared that convictions / prison sentences might meet with some opposition or reaction from some Pakistan supporters, but from the odd bits and pieces I've read, I get the impression that the majority view among Pakistan fans is that the trial and its outcome were fair. I've always disliked the idea of punishing groups for the deeds of individuals. Doesn't make sense to me.

Apart from that, even a banned Pakistan could get into controversy .

As far as ICC handling goes: a ban and possibly a fine. But the British criminal court is not about cricket or cricket results. Butt, Asif and Amir have been found guilty of conspiracy to accept corrupt payments and conspiracy to cheat. The criminal trial was merely about making money by rigging bets. People who rig bets should be considered as major criminals. I can't say I find the jail sentences harsh.

The only thing I can think of as a proper defense, is for Amir. He might very well have been under a LOT of pressure by Butt to conspire with him.
